Bayern to hold talks with Niko Kovac after “slapstick” mistakes v Fortuna

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has revealed the club intends to have discussions with manager Niko Kovac following their awful form this season.

Despite being 3-1 up with 15 minutes to go on Saturday, Bayern were pegged back by Fortuna Dusseldorf to draw 3-3 with Watford loanee Dodi Lukebakio scoring a hat-trick against the defending Bundesliga champions.

Crisis talks for Niko Kovac?: Five things you need to know

  1. Niko Kovac was named as Bayern Munich manager in the summer, replacing Jupp Heynckes.
  2. But Bayern have started the new season poorly, winning just half of their opening 12 league games.
  3. Their poor form was summed up by a 3-3 draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf in which “slapstick” errors allowed their opponents to come from 3-1 down.
  4. And now, Bayern look set to hold talks with Kovac, though Uli Hoeness confirmed the Croatian’s future is secure.
  5. Bayern are currently fifth in the Bundesliga, nine points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Club president Hoeness spoke to reporters after the match and admitted they aim to hold discussions with Kovac in relation to Bayern’s poor start to the season.

“Today is a difficult day for us,” he said to Bild.

“There is a need for internal discussions. But on Tuesday our coach will definitely be called Niko Kovac.”

“What I saw in the first goal I know only from slapstick comedy films.

“That is surreal. I feel like I am in a bad film.”

Bayern’s poor start the season has also seen them lose to title rivals Borussia Dortmund, twice surrendering a lead in a 3-2 defeat in November.

Can Niko Kovac turn it around?

The Bayern boss must have known the expectation from the club’s hierarchy and supporters when taking on the position this summer.

However, it would have taken a very brave person to bet their season would start as bad as it has done, with their title challenge seemingly over already.

Bayern’s form in the Champions League redeems them slightly. They currently sit top of Group E with 10 points, winning three games and drawing once.

The talent in Bayern’s squad is undeniable and you would imagine that this domestic form wouldn’t last. Whether Kovac is the man to turn their fortunes around waits to be seen.
