David Moyes reveals a Champions League-winning midfielder agreed to sign for him at Man Utd in 2013

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos agreed to join Manchester United in 2013, according to former Red Devils boss David Moyes.

Moyes lasted less than 12 months at Old Trafford having been appointed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at the end of the 2012/13 season.

The Scot believes he should have been given more time and says Germany star Kroos very nearly signed for the club whilst he was in charge.

How close was Kroos to joining United? Five things you need to know about Moyes’ nearly moment:

1. Moyes claims to have to met Kroos and his wife in the summer of 2013.

2. The midfielder would have had two years left on his Bayern Munich contract at the time.

3. He was identified by Moyes and his staff as the ideal Manchester United midfielder.

4. Louis van Gaal, who took over after Moyes’ sacking, ended the club’s interest in Kroos in May 2014.

5. Kroos went on to join Real Madrid and has been there since 2014, winning one La Liga title and lifting three Champions League trophies.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, Moyes, who is currently without a job after leaving West Ham last summer, has claimed that Kroos agreed to join the Red Devils whilst he was at the helm.

“Toni Kroos had agreed to come to Manchester United with me,” Moyes said.

“I met him and his wife and we agreed it all when he was at Bayern Munich.”

The 55-year-old didn’t elaborate on why the deal didn’t go through, but had some strong words to say about why he feels he should have been given more time at Old Trafford.

“Do I feel I should have been given more time? Of course I do.

“To go to a club like Manchester United and follow someone like Sir Alex after the time he had been there, to stay for ten months…

“It couldn’t be a revolution at Manchester United, it had to be evolution. It had to take time.

“I wasn’t going to come in and change all the things Alex had done, but there were lots of things that had to be changed at the club.

“You look at the way Chelsea and Man City had been doing things and changing things along the way – Manchester United had been winning because they had a special manager and a special group of players.

“But when that all changed, it was going to take time to find its way.

“I still think they’re having difficult times at the moment.”

Did Manchester United have any choice but to sack David Moyes?

United suffered more defeats at home when Moyes was in charge (6) than in the previous three seasons combined (5).

In total, Moyes faced 51 matches whilst at the helm at Old Trafford, winning just 27, losing 15 and drawing nine.

The Red Devils managed to score 86 goals with Moyes at the helm but conceded a whopping 54.

The Scot led Man Utd to their worst-ever start to a Premier League season after seven games, earning just 10 points. Mourinho then equalled this ‘record’ in the 2018/19 season.

These figures are unacceptable for a side of United’s calibre and, at the time, things had become increasingly toxic at the club both on and off the pitch. Moyes simply had to go.
