Thomas Tuchel has responded to Jurgen Klopp’s claims Paris Saint-Germain were guilty of diving in their Champions League clash last night to make Liverpool look like “butchers”.
Both sides were aiming to seal three points in order to have a better chance of progressing to the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League campaign.
Were Liverpool treated like “butchers” v PSG? Five key things to know…
- PSG defeated Liverpool 2-1 in Paris.
- Goals from Juan Bernat and Neymar were enough to seal the three points, with James Milner converting a first-half penalty for the Reds.
- Jurgen Klopp accused PSG of continuously diving and playacting throughout the match.
- Liverpool picked up six yellow cards and gave away 20 fouls.
- Liverpool give away an average of 9.46 fouls per match in the Premier League, meaning they were deemed to commit over double their usual tally.
PSG boss Tuchel spoke to the media after the match and responded to claims made by his counterpart Klopp regarding his side’s tendency to over-dramatise tackles made by the opposition.
He told reporters after the clash: “When I lose a big game I am angry and always in a bad mood, and I will talk about other stuff to bring attention away from my team also. I hear Jurgen has his opinion and that’s fine. I’m talking about the game.
“I don’t feel it is such a big issue. We suffered a lot of fouls. You don’t have to commit a lot of fouls, especially if you are 1-0 down. If you are 1-0 down then don’t commit 10 fouls in the next 10 minutes.
“I didn’t experience it this way around.
“If it is a big match and you lose then I am always in a bad mood. So if he was, then I understand. I know him very well and I don’t take this personally.”
The war of words in wake of PSG and Liverpool’s UCL clash
Tuchel was responding to damning comments made previously by Klopp who was clearly angered by the way the oil-rich French champions conducted themselves during their encounter.
In comments that could risk sanctions from Uefa, Klopp told reporters: “You act like you die and the next moment you get up. It could be a yellow card. You could do that. Everybody’s going down, it’s not football anymore. “But I don’t want to say ‘Paris didn’t deserve it.’ We were not calm enough … Our decision making was not good enough.
“We scored once and then it was clear they would struggle as they couldn’t have that intensity in the second half. We tried everything.
“A little hurdle was the 500,000 interruptions in the second half and the referee still thinks he did everything right.
“We are the fairest team in England but tonight we looked like butchers. They were always down and it looked like we used elbows. It was smart if you want, the ref let that happen.”
Klopp was not alone in his criticism. Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson said: “I would like to know how much time they wasted tonight. It’s frustrating when [Neymar] is falling like he is.”

Milner also alluded to the perceived play-acting on Twitter and former Red Jamie Carragher said the PSG players should be “embarrassed to talk to their families” after the game on pundit duty with Norwegian broadcaster Viasport Fotball.
The two German coaches have had excellent and progressive careers in football management. They even found success at the same clubs; both Borussia Dortmund and Mainz played host to these two contrasting coaches but that doesn’t mean that they have to be best buddies.
Their rivalry with each other goes back to 2011, when Klopp was in charge of Dortmund and Tuchel was managing Bundesliga side Mainz.
Dortmund defender Neven Subotic was injured and laying on the ground but Tuchel’s Mainz side failed to kick the ball out of play to allow Subotic to recieve medical attention. This angered Klopp who headed towards the Mainz dugout to confront Tuchel.
“You saw Subotic lying there, and you didn’t give a s***,” were the words Klopp directed towards Tuchel.
And thus, a friendship was born…
