Leon Bailey: I rejected Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea for the Bundesliga

Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey has revealed that he rejected the opportunity to join a host of Premier League clubs in order to play football in the Bundesliga.

The 21-year-old moved to Leverkusen from Belgium side K.R.C. Genk for a reported £20m in 2017 following some excellent displays in both the Belgian Pro League and the Europa League.

He has since gone on to make 53 appearances in all competitions for the German club, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists.

However, Bailey did have the opportunity to sign for one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, with reported interest from Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea confirmed by the playmaker.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Bailey said: “Manchester United, City, Chelsea, Liverpool – a lot of clubs were interested.

“But the most important thing as a pro is taking things a step at a time and not rushing to the top too quickly. Because once you get there, where do you go next?

“I believe the right timing is important, and it was the right moment to be at Bayer Leverkusen.

“They are a tremendous club with so much history. A lot of good players have come from there; they can get into the Champions League and are always doing well. So why not them? It was the perfect move for me and I’m happy I made it.

“My focus isn’t really on moving anywhere yet. I’m just about what’s happening right now rather than what could happen in the future. I’m still learning.”

Bayer Leverkusen’s next fixture

Bayer face FC Zurich on Thursday in the Europa League before travelling to face RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
