Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been urged to go out and sign Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele.
The Frenchman has experienced mix fortunes since his move to the Catalonian giants at the beginning of last season.
Could Dembele join Arsenal? Four good-to-know stats and facts
- Dembele joined Barcelona for a reported fee worth up to €145 million in August 2017.
- In his first league start against Getafe, he injured his hamstring and was ruled out for four months.
- Dembele is understood to have struggled to settle at Barcelona amid concerns over his focus.
- Arsenal say they are in the market for a new attacker after Danny Welbeck suffered a nasty ankle injury.
- But Barcelona have publicly ruled out the possibility of selling Dembele, who appears to have no weak foot.
Dembele’s unrest may convince Arsenal to dig deep and find the funds needed to bring the talented forward to play in the Premier League. However, it is this unrest that causes doubt among some over Dembele’s professionalism.
Former Gunners midfielder Ray Parlour believes that Emery should take a chance on the Barcelona star, but only if he is up to the task of bringing the best out of the winger.
“He’s a quality player,” Parlour told the Daily Star. “He would definitely bring more quality to the team. That’s the sort of player you’ve got to be looking at.
“I think they do look at the background as well – how he would affect the dressing room? Will he knuckle down and work hard? That is down to the people who are buying the players now to look into his character. I’m sure they know lots of guys who have dealt with him.
“He’s a quality player so if Emery can handle his personality then he certainly would make the squad better and the team better.”
How good is Ousmane Dembele?
Still just 21 years old, Dembele has experienced a fair amount in his short professional career in football.
He made his big breakthrough with Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennais FC, where he scored 12 goals in 29 appearances in the 2015/16 season.
This was enough to convince Dortmund to bring him to the Bundesliga and he slotted straight into the starting line-up, scoring 10 goals in 50 appearances in all competitions. While there, he and current Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang became fast friends. When Aubameyang scored 31 times in the 2016/17 Bundesliga season to win the golden boot, the Gabon international had Dembele to thank for 10 of his goals. This made for the most prolific assist-to-goal combination in Europe’s top five leagues that season.

But then their paths diverged.
Dembele’s rapid pace, eye for goal and confidence was clear to see and there was no surprise that Barcelona decided to buy him, albeit for a slightly inflated transfer fee.
Time will tell as to whether Dembele will reach his potential but that is exactly what he has at the moment, time. Will it be spent in Spain or England though?
