Maurizio Sarri: I hope Inter Milan learn from Chelsea’s key mistake v Spurs

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has offered advice to Inter Milan ahead of their clash with Tottenham Hotspur this week.

The Blues lost 3-1 to Spurs yesterday to put an abrupt end to their unbeaten start to their Premier League campaign and see Mauricio Pochettino’s side leapfrog their London rivals into third.

Tottenham facing Inter Milan in the Champions League: five things you need to know

  1. Spurs face a tough task to make it through to the Champions League knock-out rounds
  2. The London side lost away to Inter and at home to Barcelona in their opening two matches of the group
  3. In a must-win game away to PSV, Spurs conceded a late equaliser to draw 2-2
  4. Tottenham did win the return fixture at Wembley 2-1 which has given them a small chance in progressing in the competition
  5. They have to beat Inter and will need a positive result at the Nou Camp

The Chelsea boss spoke to Sky Sport Italia (via Football Italia) in regards to how to cope with the threat Tottenham have within their squad. He also admitted his side were awful in yesterday’s fixture and that Wembley Stadium isn’t an easy place to play your football.

“Perhaps it was the worst Chelsea performance of the season, but it was also in a stadium that I don’t like. There is an enormous distance from the crowd, so you don’t get the usual atmosphere of an English arena.

“We played badly against a strong opponent.

“Inter are a good team, so I just hope they don’t have the same initial approach that we did.

“It’s important to contain them in the first 30 minutes, as that is when Spurs are really dangerous. Inter must also avoid losing possession in their own half, because when it comes to counter-attacks, Tottenham are one of the most effective teams in Europe.”

Chelsea’s first loss of the Premier League campaign

Sarri was right to feel disappointed in yesterday’s result, with his Chelsea side second best to Tottenham Hotspur for the duration of the 90 minutes.

It didn’t take long for Spurs to go in front, with Dele Alli scoring his sixth goal in five games against the Blues after just eight minutes.

With 16 minutes on the clock, it turned into a very English affair with England captain Harry Kane converting to double the host side’s lead.

Talented attacker Son Heung-Min sealed the three points before a late Olivier Giroud consolation completed the scoring in Saturday’s late kick-off.
