Jose Mourinho accuses Man Utd players of lacking “heart” v Crystal Palace

Jose Mourinho has taken aim at his players following Manchester United‘s 0-0 stalemate with Crystal Palace over the weekend.

The Portuguese tactician witnessed his United side fire a blank against strugglers Palace, though the point was enough to take side above Bournemouth, who lost 2-1 to Arsenal this afternoon.

Mourinho’s latest dig at Man Utd players: what you need to know

    1. Mourinho, on occasion, has been openly critical of his players since taking the reigns at Old Trafford.
    2. The Portuguese manager recently called into question the character of his younger players, believing the likes of Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford lack “maturity.”
    3. Mourinho was also critical of Anthony Martial following the club’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham earlier in the season.
    4. His latest criticism comes after a goalless draw against the Eagles, ensuring his side have won just three of their nine games at Old Trafford this season.

Prior to the match, Mourinho had described the next eight games between now and the end of the year as key fixtures in the club’s aspirations of forcing their way into top four contention.

However, the Red Devils produced a rather tame and lacklustre performance against Roy Hodgson’s men, with Patrick van Aanholt and Andros Townsend squandering glorious chances to steal all three points, and Mourinho was less than impressed by the mentality of his players.

“You must play with brain and also with heart and I think not enough heart,” he said (via BBC Sport).

“We didn’t have that intensity that in my opinion is basically related with your brain, with your heart. There are games that are special games and not just one more, and this was a special game.

“It was the first of eight Premier League games until the end of December and a game we needed to win, and it was not enough from the heart.”

United’s worst start for 28 years continues

The draw against Palace widened the gap between United and Premier League leaders Manchester City to 14 points after just 13 matches, while the club also sit seven points behind fourth-place Chelsea.

After the match, Mourinho described the result as two points dropped rather than a point gained, further venting his frustrations as United failed to score a goal in a top-flight home match against Palace for the first time since 1970.

He added: “I’m frustrated. We didn’t win one point – we lost two. There was not even aggression and not enough intensity.

“When the opponent had the ball, we didn’t press enough. They were allowed to breathe and relax.

“When you are at home and want to win the game then you don’t stop until you win it. We played the game nicely but not with enough intensity.”

This was the Red Devils first clean sheet of the season on home turf but after recalling Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku to the starting XI, Mourinho will be lamenting, not only the draw but also his side’s rather lax performance.
