Since arriving at Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored 14 goals in 16 Premier League matches played on a Sunday.
His winning goal in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Bournemouth was his 18th league strike for the Gunners, 78% of which have come on the final day of the week.
It’s a remarkable record, and it got us thinking about other specific day specialists in Premier League history.
So, we asked our friends at Opta to tell us whether anyone can better Aubameyang’s record on a Sunday and who is the king of every other day of the week.
We have the all-time top scorers for all seven days, as well as the players with the best goal-to-game ration on each (minimum of three games played).
Read on for the results.
MONDAY
Total
Andrew Cole: 18 goals in 34 games
Alan Shearer: 16 goals in 31 games
Ian Wright: 16 goals in 21 games
Monday, Monday, so good to Man United. Just under a fifth of Andrew Cole’s 93 Premier for the Red Devils were scored on a Monday. The striker scored a total of 187 Premier League goals in his career.
Per game
Carlos Tevez: 1 goal per game (13 in 13)
Dimitar Berbatov: 1 goal per game (10 in 10)
Hernan Crespo: 1 goal per game (4 in 4)
Hernan Crespo scored 10 Premier League goals in 2003/04 and another 10 in 2005/06; he spent the campaign in between, 2004/05, on loan at AC Milan, for whom he scored twice in the Champions League final against Liverpool.
TUESDAY
Total
Alan Shearer: 15 goals in 19 games
Wayne Rooney: 13 goals in 21 games
Christian Benteke: 10 goals in 15 games
Tuesday afternoon is never ending, a bit like Alan Shearer’s list of goalscoring records. He remains the Premier League’s all-time top scorer with 260 goals, at least 52 more than anyone else.
Per game
Peter Ndlovu: 1.4 goals per game (7 in 5)
Andrey Arshavin: 1.25 goals per game (5 in 4)
DJ Campbell: 1.25 goals per game (5 in 4)
DJ Campbell scored 13 goals in his only Premier League season with Blackpool. Five of those goals came on Tuesdays, including a strike in a 3-1 victory over Tottenham.
WEDNESDAY
Total
Alan Shearer: 27 goals in 49 games
Robbie Fowler: 21 goals in 35 games
Andrew Cole: 20 goals in 53 games
Robbie Fowler scored 65 goals in his first 108 Premier League appearances for Liverpool but injuries and off-field controversies eventually saw his game time reduced at Anfield.
Per game
Tony Yeboah: 0.89 goals per game (8 in 9)
Papiss Cisse: 0.86 goals per game (6 in 17)
Rafael van der Vaart: 0.83 goals per game (5 in 6)
Tony Yeboah was clinical whenever he played on a Wednesday. He is perhaps best remembered for scoring stunning goals against Wimbledon and Liverpool.
THURSDAY
Total
Harry Kane: 6 goals in 3 games
Alexis Sanchez: 4 goals in 4 games
Andrei Kanchelskis: 3 goals in 1 games
In the penultimate round of fixtures in the 2016/17 season, Tottenham thrashed Leicester 6-1 on a Thursday evening at the King Power Stadium. Harry Kane scored four on the night on his way to winning the Premier League Golden Boot.
Per game
Harry Kane: 2 goals per game (6 in 3)
Alexis Sanchez: 1 goals per game (4 in 4)
Andrew Cole: 0.5 goals per game (2 in 4)
Alan Shearer: 0.5 goals per game (2 in 4)
A silver lining for Alexis Sanchez: the Chilean could be playing Thursday night fixtures on a regular basis in 2018/19 if Man United carry on the way they’re going this season.
FRIDAY
Total
Thierry Henry: 11 goals in 4 games
Craig Bellamy: 4 goals in 4 games
Dean Holdsworth: 3 goals in 2 games
Dean Windass: 3 goals in 2 games
Papiss Cisse: 3 goals in 2 games
Thierry Henry enjoyed a Long Good Friday in 2003/04; all of the Frenchman’s Premier League goals scored on a Friday came in Arsenal’s “Invincibles” season. Two weeks after scoring a hat-trick against Liverpool, Henry bagged four against Leeds.
Per game
Thierry Henry: 2.75 per game (11 goals in 4 games)
Craig Bellamy: 1 per game (4 goals in 4 games)
Glenn Murray: 0.75 per game (3 goals in 4 games)
Jamie Vardy: 0.75 per game (3 goals in 4 games)
Gotta get down on Friday, a mantra Jamie Vardy follows more than most. The striker must have been having a party when he signed a new contract with the Foxes on a Friday in August.
SATURDAY
Total
Alan Shearer: 163 goals in 251 games
Andrew Cole: 111 goals in 236 games
Wayne Rooney: 106 goals in 248 games
Saturday, what a day, rockin’ all week with Roo. It being the most common day English football is played on, it’s no surprise to see the Premier League’s leading all-time goalscorers make up the top three here.
Per game
Sergio Aguero: 0.86 goals per game (86 in 100)
Luis Suarez: 0.84 goals per game (37 in 44)
Ruud van Nistelrooy: 0.77 goals per game (63 in 82)
Despite the fine records of Shearer, Rooney and Cole, three other strikers have scored at a more regular rate on a Saturday.
SUNDAY
Total
Wayne Rooney: 63 goals in 142 games
Jermain Defoe: 48 goals in 135 games
Thierry Henry: 46 goals in 67 games
Easy like Sunday morning, or afternoon in Jermain Defoe’s case. The striker scored an incredible five times in Tottenham’s 9-1 win over Wigan Athletic on a Sunday just over nine years ago.
Per game
Afonso Alves: 1.0 goals per game (5 in 5)
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: 0.88 goals per game (14 in 16)
Scott Dobie: 0.75 goals per game (3 in 4)
Afonso Alves scored 10 Premier League goals for Middlesbrough, five of which came across two Sunday matches. Bizarrely, he scored twice in a 2-2 draw with Man United and bagged a hat-trick in an 8-1 thumping of Man City.
Despite being the Lord’s Day, Nicklas Bendtner does not make this list. In fact, only five of his 32 goals were scored on a Sunday.
