David Ginola tips Alexander-Arnold to become one of the best in the world

Former France star David Ginola believes Liverpool youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold could become one of the best in the world at what he does.

The 20-year-old whipped in a delightful free-kick in the Reds’ 3-0 win over Watford last Saturday, capping an excellent fortnight for the right-back, who scored his first senior England goal during the last international break.

Just how good could Alexander-Arnold become? Five key things to know…

  1. After a remarkable 2017/18 campaign for the defender, Alexander-Arnold looks to be developing all the time under Jurgen Klopp.
  2. The Liverpool academy graduate has shone at right-back but is also capable of playing in midfield.
  3. His goal against Watford was his second league goal for the Reds.
  4. Ginola and Jamie Carragher heaped praise on Alexander-Arnold on Sky Sports on Monday.
  5. Saturday’s game at Vicarage Road marked his 60th first team appearance for Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold broke into the first team at Liverpool in the second half of the 2016/17 season and made his Premier League debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

He benefitted from an injury to first-choice right-back Nathaniel Clyne last season and has now cemented himself as Klopp’s go-to option in that position.

The Liverpool-born defender played a huge part in the Reds’ road to the Champions League final last season and started against Real Madrid in Kiev, before being named in England’s squad for the World Cup.

Reflecting on Alexander-Arnold’s terrific free-kick against Watford on Sky Sports, former Newcastle and Spurs midfielder Ginola tipped Alexander-Arnold to go right to the top of the game.

“I like this player!” Ginola said.

“He has everything he needs to be one of the best. He’s fast, but he’s also a fast thinker. He creates things. He has pure talent.

“David Beckham was one of the best (at free-kicks), Trent looked like him with that goal.”

What does the future hold for Trent Alexander-Arnold?

The 20-year-old is emerging as one of the Premier League’s most exciting full-backs, but is that where he will play for the majority of his career?

There have been suggestions that those on Klopp’s coaching staff believe that Alexander-Arnold will eventually become a midfield player.

He made a handful of appearances in a midfield three toward the end of last season for the Reds, but it seems that Klopp definitely feels the youngster is best suited to playing at right-back for now.

But goals like the one he scored against Watford prove that Alexander-Arnold is certainly blessed with enough technical quality to play in the centre of the park.

The England international recently claimed that he would like to stay at Liverpool for his whole career, which would see him emulate his hero, Steven Gerrard.
