Paris Saint-Germain vs Liverpool predictions and match preview

The Champions League is back for the fifth gameweek and fans are being treated to a big clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool.

The last time these two sides met, Liverpool emerged victorious 3-2 at Anfield, but a lot is on the line for the Reds’ visit to France.

When is Paris Saint-Germain vs Liverpool?

Competition: Uefa Champions League

Venue: Parc des Princes

Date: Wednesday, 28 November

Kick-off: 8:00 PM GMT

Match preview

After four games in the Champions League, Group C represents the most open in this season’s tournament with just two points separating top from bottom.

Paris Saint-Germain have enjoyed a perfect start in Ligue 1, yet to drop a single point, but they have made heavy weather of things in the Champions League.

Thomas Tuchel’s men are currently third in Group C after four games, winning once, drawing twice and losing once. The Parisians come into the Liverpool game off the back of consecutive stalemates against group leaders Napoli and will most likely need to beat Liverpool on Wednesday if they are to continue their quest for the knockout stages.

Liverpool are just one point ahead of PSG going into the game, after winning two and losing two of their four matches so far. The Reds were shocked by Red Star Belgrade last time out, when a win would have seen them take control of the group.

Now, Jurgen Klopp’s men have two tough games to manoeuvre against PSG and then Napoli, knowing they can still finish anywhere from first to fourth.

Where can I watch live?

PSG’s game against Liverpool can be viewed by UK residents on BT Sport 2, channel 414 on Sky and channel 528, for Virgin Media users. BT Sport subscribers can also watch the game online at sport.bt.com and via their BT Sport app.

What are the permutations?

Despite the openness of Group C, Liverpool could secure their place in the last-16 of the Champions League if they beat PSG on Wednesday evening – but, only if Napoli beat Red Star Belgrade. Should the Serbian side provide another shock and beat Napoli, the group will go to the final day with all teams still able to qualify.

However, should PSG lose and Napoli win, the French champions will be unable to reach the last-16, setting up a final game Europa League play-off with Red Star Belgrade.

Why are Liverpool wearing their home kit?

Home and away kits are that by name only nowadays, with some teams opting to use their home kit while playing on the road, potential clashes aside. And for Wednesday’s trip to Paris, Liverpool have confirmed they will be wearing their traditional red strip, due to PSG’s plans to wear their white away kit at home.

A statement on Liverpool’s website read: “Liverpool will wear their home kit for Wednesday’s Champions League encounter with Paris Saint-Germain in France.

“The home side have elected to sport their all-white away strip.

“It means Jürgen Klopp’s side will be in all-red at the Parc des Princes.”

Can PSG finally carry league form over to Europe?

The big problem for PSG over the past few seasons has been their inability to replicate their form from Ligue 1, in the Champions League. Some will point towards the increased competition in the Champions League compared to the French division, but Kylian Mbappe believes his side are not far away from winning Europe’s premier club competition.

“We have struggled a bit so far, but we are still in the running and we have our fate in our own hands,” he said.

“I think that in order to win a competition you need things to click into place.

“We are not missing much. It is not much but at the same time it is a lot, because in top-level football it is the little details that are the most important.”

One thought worth pursuing is, should PSG lose to Liverpool, how does Tuchel motivate his team for a season in the Europa League? Failure to get through the Champions League groups would, in a sense, spell the end of their season, in that outright wins in France’s three domestic competitions would likely still fall below expectations for the reigning Ligue 1 champions.

Head-to-head

Wednesday’s game in France will be just the fourth time Liverpool and PSG have gone ahead in official competition with the English side boasting a slight advantage. Including the 3-2 win at Anfield in September, the Reds have won two games to PSG’s one.

PSG wins: 6 Draws:Liverpool wins: 6

Team news

The big question ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Paris is whether Kylian Mbappe and Neymar will be fit, having missed PSG’s league win over Toulouse due to injuries.

Speaking before the win, PSG boss Tuchel said: “We will not take chances for tomorrow.

“But we have the possibility that they will play against Liverpool on Wednesday. I think it’s possible.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Klopp has no new injury problems and should have Joe Gomez to call upon if he so requires after confirming the Englishman has recovered from a minor ankle injury picked up in training.

“In the last second of yesterday’s session, he got a little knock,” Klopp said after Liverpool’s win.

“We thought: ‘Come on, let’s bring him and have a look in the morning.’ He said it was 80 per cent better, that’s good. So he’s no doubt for Wednesday.

“It was clear he could be rested and can recover more, and then he is ready for Wednesday again.”

Predicted Paris Saint-Germain XI: Areola; Meunier, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Bernat; Rabiot, Verratti; Mbappe, Neymar, Di Maria; Cavani.

Predicted Liverpool XI:  Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Fabinho; Shaqiri, Firmino, Mane; Salah.

1. PSG to win @ 11/10

PSG have struggled to carry league form over to the Champions League this season, but they may just have the upper hand going into Wednesday’s game.

Their opponents Liverpool may be ahead of them in Group C, but the Reds are yet to win away from home in the Champions League this season, losing in Italy and Serbia.

Liverpool also last their final away game in the Champions League last season, a 4-2 defeat to Roma in the second leg of their semi-final, though the Reds would still go onto the final.

Key Stat: Liverpool are yet to win away in the Champions League.

2. Mohamed Salah to score @ 5/4

At the start of the season, there was talks of Mohamed Salah being a one-season wonder, but the Egyptian is once again starting to prove his doubters wrong.

Salah netted in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Watford at the weekend continuing in his more advanced position and looks as dangerous as ever in front of goal.

His Champions League form has not been quite as good as it was last season, with just two goals in his four games so far, but the Egyptian is a big game player and this is the biggest game of Liverpool’s season in Europe so far.

Key Stat: Mohamed Salah has scored six goals in his last six games for Liverpool across all competitions.

3. Both teams to score @ 2/5

Liverpool and PSG may have stern defences in their respective leagues, but the Champions League is a different story.

The first meeting between these two sides in September brought five goals in a Liverpool win, and it is likely to be more of the same in France on Wednesday.

Only Manchester City (12) have scored more goals than PSG (11) in the Champions League this season, while Liverpool have also grabbed a respectable seven so far.

Key Stat: Champions League games involving PSG and Liverpool have seen 30 goals scored this season.
