Dortmund will try to sign Hakimi after securing Alcacer on permanent deal

Borussia Dortmund have revealed that they will try to sign on-loan full-back Achraf Hakimi on a permanent basis from Real Madrid.

Hakimi, 20, has made a brilliant start to life in the Ruhr district after relocating from Madrid over the summer, and now Dortmund have expressed their intent to try and recruit the Morocco international permanently following the signing of Paco Alcacer.

Can Dortmund secure Hakimi’s future? Five key things to know…

  1. Hakimi is currently on a two-year loan deal with the leading Bundesliga club, joining in July from Real Madrid.
  2. Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke is keen to wrap up a deal for the young defender following an electric start to the season.
  3. His announcement comes after the club activated a clause to sign on-loan Barcelona striker Paco Alcacer on a permanent basis.
  4. Hakimi had previously stated his desire to return to Madrid but was shocked when the club’s hierarchy dismissed Julen Lopetegui.
  5. With stern competition at right-back in the Spanish capital and Dortmund’s unbeaten start to the season under Lucien Favre, Hakimi may be tempted to remain at the Westfalenstadion.

The defender has made eight league appearances as Dortmund sit atop the Bundesliga, having won nine, drawn three and lost none, and Watzke, who was announcing the arrival of Alcacer, took time to state his eagerness to recruit Hakimi.

“Dear Paco Alcacer, welcome to Borussia Dortmund,” said Watzke, who was giving a speech at the club’s annual assembly (via Goal).

“And Achraf Hakimi – we will try to do the same thing with you, even though it will not be easy.”

The Madrid native had made something of a minor breakthrough season last term, playing 17 matches across all competitions, including nine in La Liga under the stewardship of Zinedine Zidane.

However, following the arrival of Alvaro Odriozola from Real Sociedad, Hakimi fell down the pecking order and opted to secure a loan move away from the club.

Hakimi in Dortmund

Hakimi has become a central component of Lucien Favre’s tactical approach, playing either left-back or right-back, such is the versatility of the on-loan Madridista.

He has so far made 11 appearances across all competitions, including two in the Champions League where he hit headlines for registering a hat-trick of assists in the club’s 4-0 mauling of Atletico Madrid last month.

Hakimi has also scored one goal, coming during a 7-0 win against Nurnberg in the Bundesliga in September, while he has also registered a further three assists in the league, taking his assist tally to six for the season.

At present, no Dortmund defender has created more chances (six) than Hakimi, attempted more dribbles (22), registered more shots (nine), drawn more fouls (10) or blocked more crosses (five).
