Bayern Munich have announced their future home kits will only feature red and white after positive discussions with the club’s fans.
The reigning Bundesliga champions have not had the best start to their defence, currently sitting fifth in the table, nine points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.
What is the problem with Bayern’s kit? Five key things to know…
- Though Bayern Munich’s primary colours are red and while, the club have had blue on their home kits before this season.
- But the Germany champions christened their new jersey with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Stuttgart at the end of last season, with the kit already being protested.
- The protests have been due to blue being the main colour of traditional rivals 1860 Munich, with the blue goalkeeper kit also receiving criticism.
- It is not just the home kits, however, with fans also protesting the mint green away kit and purple third jersey for having nothing to do with the club’s heritage.
- But now, after talks with fans, Bayern have confirmed the future home kits will be just red and white.
While on field moments, and the stewardship of Niko Kovac have been criticised by fans and pundits alike, some sections of the Bayern support have taken their anger out on the club’s kit.
This season has seen protests from the club’s Ultras over the tint of blue in Bayern’s home kit, and as a result, talks started with fans.
And now, Bayern’s Director of Internationalisation and Strategy Jörg Wacker has confirmed all future home kits will solely feature red and white after discussions with fans.
Speaking in a statement released on Bayern’s official website, Wacker said: “FC Bayern München AG has been in conversation with fan representatives about the use of club colours in kits.

“For fans, kits represent an important sign of identity with their club. FC Bayern München AG has thus announced that in future, only the club’s traditional colours of red and white will be used in official match clothing – that is the home kit comprising shirt, shorts and socks.”
Wacker also confirmed fans will continue to have their say on future kits for Bayern, with talks to continue on a regular basis.
He added: “We will also stay in regular contact with fan representatives in relations to kits.”
Bayern’s blue history
This season is not the first time Bayern have had blue on their home kits, with the German champions donning red and blue stripes in the 2014/15 season.
Then managed my Pep Guardiola, fans’ outcry was not as widespread outside of inner circles as the club went on to win the Bundesliga and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.
That striped kit was modelled off another red and blue jersey from 1995, which followed Bayern kits having blue on for the previous three seasons.
Only since 2003 have Bayern kits returned to predominantly featuring red and white, with black also featuring heavily in the period between 1997 and 2003.
