Alexis Sanchez will be unavailable for Manchester United for “a long time,” manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed.
The left-sided forward suffered a hamstring injury, as confirmed by the club on Thursday evening, and it is thought he will miss the next six weeks.
How badly will Man Utd miss Alexis Sanchez? Five key things to know:
- Alexis Sanchez has just three goals in 22 league games since moving from Arsenal in January.
- The transfer has even been compared to Fernando Torres’ disappointing £50m Chelsea transfer.
- But Sanchez actually has more assists (5) and chances created (41) than any teammate in his time at the club.
- He has also started in the centre-forward position in two of United’s last three wins.
- Sanchez will miss key games in December against Arsenal (05/12) and Liverpool (16/12).
United’s injury list currently includes Victor Lindelof, Marcos Rojo, Diogo Dalot and Matteo Darmian.
Should the rough estimate of six weeks hold true, Sanchez will miss 10 Premier League games before returning for the trip to Spurs in mid-January, where United will hope to exact revenge for their 3-0 home defeat earlier this season.
But Sanchez will certainly miss two other games against top-six rivals Arsenal and Liverpool, with Mourinho having told reporters during Friday morning’s press conference: “It is an aggressive muscular injury.
“He has not had a scan yet but the player is experienced. He knows what injury is.
“From my experience, the painful scream and way it happened, it will be a long time.”
It is likely United will also be without Lindelof, who has emerged as a regular starter over the course of this season, for the aforementioned games. But Mourinho says the Swedish central defender’s injury, sustained in the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, is less serious than Sanchez’s.
He added: “It is not a little muscular injury that he will be ready in a week or 10 days. For me and Alexis Sanchez, the grade is different to the one that Lindelof has and that was not easy.”
Of Lindelof, who missed the midweek Champions League win over Young Boys, Mourinho previously said: “I hope that he can play around Christmas time, when we have [an] accumulation of matches.
“I would say three weeks or something like that.”
