PSG star: Liverpool are strong, but they have three players to watch "especially"

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon says he cannot think of a better front three in Europe than Liverpool’s attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Buffon’s side are to take on the Reds at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday as the pair look to secure their spots in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Are Salah, Mane and Firmino the best attacking trio around? Four key points

  1. The trio made a name for themselves as one of the most deadly frontlines in the game during the Reds’ journey to the Champions League final last season.
  2. They scored 91 goals between them during 2017/18.
  3. Many believe that PSG’s trio of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Edinson Cavani is the only other forward line that comes close to Liverpool’s.
  4. All three are expected to start against PSG on Wednesday after Mane recovered from a bout of illness.
  5. This term they have scored 19 of the 31 goals the Reds have managed so far.

After claiming that Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson was currently among the best three players in his position in world football, former Juventus star Buffon appeared to praise the Reds’ attacking trio as the best on the continent.

“Liverpool have a very strong team – but I do especially look at their front players,” the 40-year-old told The Mirror.

“With Salah, Mane, and Firmino they have so much pace, so much creativity, and of course they are all big goal threats.

“Throughout my career, I have always wanted to test myself against the best — and at the moment you really can’t think of any teams in Europe who have a better front three than Liverpool.”

Buffon is expected to face the trio on Wednesday and what makes his comments even more interesting is the fact PSG have splashed over £400m on the likes of Mbappe and Neymar in recent years.

Liverpool’s front three vs PSG’s front three: how do they really compare?

Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel are fortunate to have some of the best attacking players in the world at their disposal, but who has come out on top so far this season?

Mohamed Salah and Neymar are the star players for their teams, and the stats suggest that the latter has outperformed Liverpool’s talisman in the Champions League so far this season.

Neymar has managed one more goal than Salah and the duo have had a similar amount of shots, but crucially, the Brazilian outperforms the Reds’ star on shot accuracy and shots on target.

Kylian Mbappe has outperformed Sadio Mane by one strike in terms of goals scored in this seasons competition so far, but he has had seven more attempts on goal.

Mane’s shot accuracy, what’s more, is actually up on Mbappe’s as it stands.

Roberto Firmino and Edinson Cavani are usually the two players tasked with leading the line for their teams.

Firmino has actually been used in a more reserved attacking role this season, so it’s interesting that he has the better attacking stats over Cavani here.

Whatever happens in Wednesday’s match, we’re sure to see some of the very best attacking players on show. Will Liverpool back up Buffon’s claim in Paris?
