Everton supporters are desperate for the club to secure the permanent signing of midfielder Andre Gomes, with the Portugal international impressing during his loan spell from Barcelona.
Toffees boss Marco Silva has revealed that he would like to sign Gomes on a permanent basis when the time is right and fans seem equally keen to snap him up as soon as possible.
Will Everton make Andre Gomes’ loan move from Barcelona permanent? Five things to know:
- Gomes made the move to Goodison Park on transfer deadline day alongside Barcelona teammate Yerry Mina.
- The 25-year-old was unable to take part in the opening weeks of the season as he recovered from injury.
- But Gomes has now started each of Everton’s last five matches and has been hugely impressive in the heart of Marco Silva’s midfield.
- Silva has claimed that his side “have to do something” to permanently sign Gomes, who cost Barcelona a reported £29m when they bought him from Valencia in 2016.
- Gomes has made 78 appearances for Barcelona to date and it is unclear if he would be open to a permanent move to Merseyside.
Gomes’ introduction to the Everton team has coincided with them winning five of their last seven Premier League matches, with Silva’s side now up to sixth in the table.
He has shone alongside Idrissa Gueye in midfield, with Gylfi Sigurdsson able to express himself ahead of what has become a solid and creative partnership.
When pressed on whether the Toffees would look into signing Gomes permanently, Silva told reporters: “I think in the right moment we have to do something to achieve one player like Andre.
“We have time to do that. We are happy with him, he is enjoying the moment here and I don’t think it is a good moment to talk every week because it’s better they (Barcelona) forget about him a little bit about Andre!
“You go there in the right moment. Andre is enjoying his time but we don’t want to put this pressure of a decision on him. It is early.
“When you make a loan, and not just Andre but Zouma as well, if you can do something tomorrow then you have to do it but football is not like that.
“At the end of the season we will talk to the players and with the clubs and after then we will take the decision or not.”
Everton supporters are on board with Silva’s views and have compared him to former Toffees midfield star Mikel Arteta.
I'd be absolutely gutted if #efc don't sign Andre Gomes permanently. Best midfielder I've seen for us since Arteta, and can easily surpass him in terms of quality and class. Absolute no brainer to splash the cash on him

Never mind Arteta, Gomes reminds me of Paul Bracewell…..and to blues of a certain age that is praise indeed. #EFC

Andre Gomes is hands down the best CM we’ve had at the club since Arteta.. drives the team forward, never loses the ball, passing range second to none in our team maybe sigurdsson but still what a player.

Signing Gomes on a permanent basis, should be Silva & Brands top priority in the summer – even ahead of signing a striker.
The lad is class. He reminds me of Arteta when he first arrived.
Not to mention his contribution to the local economy via the spike in mop sales!

Could Gomes’ Everton form attract interest from elsewhere?
It’s interesting that Marco Silva wanted to play down the hype around Gomes in case Barcelona decide they need him in their team.
The Portuguese playmaker was highly thought of whilst coming through the ranks with Benfica and supposedly attracted interest from Everton’s Merseyside rivals Liverpool.
He moved to Valencia after their influx of cash and eventually earned a move to Catalan giants Barcelona.
But things have never really worked out for Gomes at Camp Nou and he came in for a lot of criticism from their supporters.
Having said that, there’s a reason they signed him in the first place, and he’s starting to show what he can do in the Premier League.
It’s no surprise that Everton are keen to tie him down to a long-term deal, but it may be that there are other clubs who are also monitoring the midfielder.
He is a player of Champions League quality and if his good form continues, don’t be surprised to see other sides in for him in the upcoming transfer windows.
