Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has admitted he is reconsidering his future at the club due to a lack of contract negotiations.
The 29-year old has been a regular for both club and country and is highly renowned as one of the most talents left-backs in European football.
How close is Alba to signing a new contract? Five key things to know…
- Jordi Alba signed for Barcelona in 2012, joining from fellow La Liga side Valencia for £11.2m.
- After impressing, the Spaniard extended his contract in 2015 keeping him at Barcelona in 2020.
- Alba has previously expressed his desire to sign a new deal with Barcelona, but his agent has revealed the club have kept them waiting for 18 months.
- And now, the full-back has conceded he may need to start planning his future elsewhere, despite hopes of finishing his career with Barcelona.
- Alba has played 264 games in six years for Barcelona, winning a plethora of trophies along the way.
Speaking to reporters after Barcelona’s last-gasp draw against Atletico Madrid – with Ousmane Dembele netting late on after Diego Costa had earlier scored for Atletico – Alba confirmed that he may have to seek opportunities elsewhere if a deal can’t be arranged with his current employers.
“I have no news.
“I don’t know what the club think of me and it’s strange because there’s not much more of my contract left.
“My intentions are to finish my career here but we’ll see as I don’t know what their intentions are or when they think it will be convenient to call me.”
Does Jordi Alba deserve a new contract at Barcelona?
The talented full-back has long established himself as Barcelona’s first-choice left-sided defender which has endeared him to the Nou Camp faithful.
In total to date, Alba has made 264 appearances in all competitions for the Catalan side, following his move from Valencia in 2012.
Despite joining from Valencia, Alba’s career actually started in Barcelona’s esteemed La Masia academy, with the full-back previously recalling his dream to play for the Blaugrana.
“My dream has always been to play here and stay at Barcelona for a long time,” he said in 2017.
Alba has won a vast amount during his tenure at Barcelona; with four La Liga title, one Champions League and four Copa del Reys among other minor trophies.
The upcoming months of negotiations could be crucial in deciding where Alba will spend the next stage of his career.
If a move from Barcelona is on the cards, many of Europe’s top clubs would be interested in signing the star.
