Tottenham Hotspur must work on preserving the lead in matches if they are to ever win a trophy, according to former club striker Dimitar Berbatov.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have already lost three matches in the Premier League this season and sit behind their north London rivals Arsenal in fifth, but up until the defeat to Manchester City last Monday they had recorded their best-ever start in the competition.
Their Champions League campaign has been far worse, with Spurs yet to win a match after three games, losing to both Barcelona and Inter Milan, while losing their lead late on in Holland to draw 2-2 with PSV.
Former club striker Berbatov believes that although Spurs have quality in their ranks, their inability to hold onto the lead will ultimately be their downfall in regards to winning future titles.
“As Juventus showed, the really good European teams know how to hold on to a lead, but that is somewhere Tottenham keep falling down in this season in the Champions League,” he told Betfair.
“After playing well to get back to 2-1 against PSV, they should have been able to see the game out, but the concentration levels slipped – as happened against Inter Milan – and it cost them again.
“I don’t think it’s down to a lack of experienced heads in the team – these players have plenty of Champions League experience now – but they need to work on the concentration as it’s not good when something keeps happening.”
Cup win key for Spurs this season?
Although their season has been far from a disaster, Spurs look increasingly unlikely to get their hands on either trophy, with their best bet at present coming in the Football League Cup.
Spurs beat West Ham United in the week to progress into the quarter-finals of the competition, where they will need to beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium to go into the final four.
The is also the FA Cup, which Premier League clubs enter in January for the third round.
