Chelsea’s players are still enjoying ‘Sarriball’ despite falling out of the top four, according to Gianfranco Zola.
Chelsea were dismantled in their last Premier League outing by champions Manchester City, who knocked six past them with ease.
What do the Chelsea players think of ‘Sarriball’? Five things to know…
- Maurizio Sarri has recently come under fire for overseeing some less than convincing performances.
- The club had lost four consecutive away matches prior to victory against Malmo on Thursday.
- One key criticism has been deploying N’Golo Kante in a more advanced role but the Frenchman has revealed he is enjoying his new position.
- Sarri himself has hit out at his players for not showing enough “battling” qualities.
- However, after a heart-to-heart meeting, David Luiz has revealed the players are fully behind ‘Sarriball’.
Despite the heavy defeat at the Etihad, Chelsea’s assistant manager is adamant that the players are enjoying the roles assigned to them by Sarri.
“Of course when you lose 6-0 you don’t enjoy it, but we also won 5-0 and everyone enjoyed that,” Zola told Sky Sports.
“But again, there is a stage when you are working on something that, when it’s still not in place, it can be hard, but there will be a moment when you are going to enjoy it a lot more than at the moment.
“I always loved this game but there were moments when I was playing that it wasn’t pleasant because I was working on it. I believe the players are enjoying what they’re doing, and like what we’re doing.
“But I also know that there are moments when we lose and things don’t work it’s painful. But we continue because we believe in what we’re doing.”
The Blues bounced back from their miserable day at the Etihad with a 1-2 victory over Malmo in the Europa League on Thursday.
Chelsea play Manchester United on Monday in the FA Cup fifth round before they get an opportunity to avenge their loss against City in the League Cup final at Wembley on 24 February.

Luiz is also a believer
It has been claimed that Chelsea’s players have been wholly confused by the tsunami of tactics their brains are flooded with before games.
The default setting on the Blues’ style of play seems to be stuck on tedious, as Chelsea persist in their robotic attempts to secure victory by boring the opposition into submission through keep ball.
Sarriball was a winner at the beginning of the campaign – it earned the Blues a lengthy unbeaten streak – but opponents have adapted and Sarri has struggled to respond.
Despite Chelsea facing growing criticism, Luiz insists all is well: “Yes, because we have had many meetings already asking if someone doesn’t believe, they can say. Nobody said anything. It’s because everyone believes [in it],” Luiz told reporters (via Football.London).
“I think it is part of the process. We are doing what he wants us to do and we are trying to improve.
“We lost against maybe the best team in the world at the moment in Manchester City. They were better than us from the beginning to the end.”
