A potential Bielsa favourite? Leeds post footage as forgotten signing scores hat-trick for u23s

Patrick Bamford has taken another step toward his return from injury, scoring a hat-trick for Leeds U23s.

The former Chelsea striker signed for Leeds in the summer for a reported fee of £7m, but has only managed seven appearances in all competitions so far after suffering a knee injury in September.

Can Bamford get back into Bielsa’s plans? Five key things to know…

  1. Bamford signed for Chelsea from Nottingham Forest in 2012 but never made a first-team appearance for the Blues.
  2. The forward was sent on various loans away including to Middlesbrough in 2015, scoring 17 league goals to help the club finish fourth in the Championship.
  3. After a permanent spell at the Riverside, Marcelo Bielsa signed Bamford following his appointment as Leeds manager.
  4. Bamford has made seven first-team appearances, scoring once, with his playing time being restricted through injury.
  5. The 23-year-old scored a hat-trick against Burnley for Leeds U23s in his bid to regain fitness and is now looking to get back into Bielsa’s plans.

However, Bamford is closing in on a full return to fitness, with the club’s official Twitter page posting footage of Bamford scoring a hat-trick of goals against Burnley’s U23 side.

After the game, Bamford said he was disappointed not to score more than three in the 6-3 win but that it felt ‘nice’ to be out there, helping the team win.

“It was nice,” said the striker (via the Mirror). “I probably could have had four, maybe five.

“Whenever it’s a chance, I expect to score. I should have scored at least four, but I’m happy to get three. It was important in the end because it helped the team win.”

Bamford eager to join Bielsa’s promotion push

Bielsa’s start to life at Leeds United could barely have gone much better, with the Yorkshire side currently sitting second in the Championship table after 21 games, having played some scintillating football along the way.

And following his hat-trick, Bamford is delighted to have the scoring feeling back and hopes to transfer it to Bielsa’s first team as soon as possible.

“As a striker, it’s important to score,” he added. “It doesn’t matter what level it’s at. It’s just getting confidence and match sharpness back to take into first-team action.”

Leeds United are only a point behind Championship leaders Norwich City and face an away trip to struggling Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
