Instagram is more important than goals to modern strikers, claims Vieri

Ex-Italy striker Christian Vieri has criticised modern-day strikers and claimed that they are more interested in how many Instagram followers they have than how many goals they score.

Vieri is known as one of Serie A’s greatest goalscorer after spells with the likes of Juventus, Lazio and AC Milan.

Despite his own Instagram account having accumulated a huge 1.9m followers, Vieri believes that strikers don’t care much for the game these days.

“You don’t need to score 30 goals anymore. No need to score every Sunday,” Vieri told Radio Deej (via Goal).

“Before, if you didn’t score then you locked yourself indoors, went back out the following day to review the mistakes you made and try to improve.

“That doesn’t happen anymore. We were sick, all my generation, especially strikers. We were sick for goals.”

Now that he’s finished his career, Vieri is enjoying life off the pitch. He is looking to build a career as a DJ and already owns restaurants and his own fashion label.

Vieri dismisses Icardi comparisons

Argentina striker Mauro Icardi has been likened to Vieri as he continues to build on his impressive goal record for Inter Milan.

The 25-year-old has managed an impressive eight goals in 11 appearances for Luciano Spalletti’s side so far this season, but Vieri has been quick to laugh off any comparisons between him and the Inter star.

“Icardi? We’re very different,” Vieri insisted.

“I wanted to start fights with everyone. I scored about 140 goals in Serie A and, more or less, I remember them all, even the chances I missed.”
