Jose Mourinho: People who don’t understand football use stats

Man United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed people who don’t understand football use stats. 

The United manager made the comments after he saw his side lose 3-1 away at Man City.

In a post-match press conference, Mourinho justified his team’s performance, lamenting mistakes borne out of tiredness with the Red Devils in action for the third time in a week, though he was facetious when asked about the title aspirations of the club.

“I think we are not going to be relegated,” the United boss said, via Evening Standard.

The Portuguese then went on to justify the Red Devils’ performance in which they only managed one shot on goal, Martial’s penalty, leaving the club now with a negative goal difference.

“So, when I analyse the game today, I think the difference was, you can go for stats,” Mourinho continued.

“That’s the way people that don’t understand football analyse football, is with stats.

“I don’t go for stats, I go for what I felt and I watch in the game and the game was there until minute 80-something.

“So, I consider the performance of my team a performance with mistakes. It’s different than a bad performance.

“One thing is a bad performance another thing is a performance with mistakes.

Despite a clear gulf in class between United and City, it’s true that Jose Mourinho’s side have enjoyed a successful six weeks since their 3-1 loss to West Ham on September 29.

The Red Devils have drawn twice, lost twice, and won four in all competitions, and that’s including two fixtures against Juventus, and games against Valencia, Everton, Man City and Chelsea.

And yet Mourinho is under intense scrutiny with United currently sitting eighth, four points behind fourth placed Arsenal and 12 points behind leaders Manchester City. With a top four finish likely to be the most realistic target for Mourinho’s side it is unsurprising that many commentators, former players and fans feel that it is not a good enough return for a club with stature and history of United.

They face Crystal Palace and Southampton next in the Premier League before a massive game at Old Trafford against Arsenal on December 4.
