Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has claimed he is ‘proud’ of the jeers he has been receiving from the club’s fans.
Los Blancos have endured a torrid start to the new season, including a run of just one win in seven games, culminating in a 5-1 El Clasico humiliation against eternal rivals Barcelona.
That result ultimately cost Julen Lopetegui his job, with Santiago Solari taking over as interim manager, with the European Champion’s form now stabilising.
Real beat Melilla 4-0 in the Copa del Rey before dispatching Valladolid in a 2-0 win at the weekend. Ramos scored in the latter but during the game, he came in for quite a large amount of stick from the Bernabeu crowd.
However, the 32-year-old claims he didn’t notice any abuse and has admitted that it would actually be a source of pride for him.
“I did not really notice the issues, but as players here we need to accept them,” Ramos told BeIn Sports (via Football Espana).
“I’m the captain of this team and I am the one who needs to front up, the truth is that I am proud fans show their anger at me.
“I understand how the fans feel, all the players do and ultimately it is us who are the ones responsible for the situation and us who can reverse it.
“Once we scored, it seemed that things had normalised and fans gave us the encouragement to push on for the victory.”
With so much upheaval at the club since the departure of Zinedine Zidane in the summer, Ramos has also commented on how important it is that players get behind Solari, as well as whoever takes over from the Argentine on a permanent basis.
“It does not matter who the Coach is, we will always be with him until death, and we hope Solari can help us at this difficult moment.”
Real Madrid face Plzen in the Champions League on Wednesday.
