Lewandowski hits back at “flat-out stupid” Hamann

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has labelled former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann as “flat-out stupid” following the criticism of his style of play.

The defending Bundesliga champions are playing catch up in the league following their poor start to the campaign and currently sit third in the table, seven points off first-placed Borussia Dortmund.

Why did Hamann criticise Lewandowski? Five things you need to know…

  1. Robert Lewandowski joined Bayern Munich from Borussia Dortmund in 2014.
  2. He has made 223 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring an incredible 175 goals.
  3. In his time at the club, Lewandowski has helped Bayern win four consecutive Bundesliga titles.
  4. Despite Bayern’s struggles this season, Lewandowski has still scored 12 goals in 19 Bundesliga appearances.
  5. However, Hamann has hit out at the striker’s “individualistic” attitude.

Hamann – who made 143 appearances for Bayern – believes that, despite Lewandowski’s obvious abilities, he isn’t the best team player.

The German said: “I think that Lewandowski is becoming a problem for Bayern. I believe it is clear that he is an individualist.”

In response to the criticism, Lewandowski has hit back at Hamann, telling the former Liverpool midfielder his comments were “flat-out stupid” and devoid of tactical sense.

Lewandowksi told ESPN: “I am always focused on my job, and cup games are always difficult to play.

“We won that match, and I am not interested in what someone says about me, even more so if that’s just flat-out stupid. I don’t think [Hamann] knows much about tactics.”

“Maybe he did not see the game”

Bayern Munich lost ground on Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga following their shock 3-1 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend.

For what was a poor performance all round for Bayern, it seemed Lewandowski was the target of Hamann’s comments, which prompted Maik Barthel – a member of the player’s management team – to defend the Bayern striker.

He said: “After the defeat against [Bayer] Leverkusen it does not help to attack players on this level as Mr Hamann has done.

“That he sees the Robert as the main cause says it all about his tactical understanding to me. Maybe he did not even see the game.”
