Real Madrid’s ‘Savio-esque’ Vinicius Jr tipped to become world-class

Former Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes has tipped Vinicius Jr to become world-class.

The Brazilian completed a £40.3m move to the Spanish capital in July 2018 and has made a very strong impression during his sporadic appearances for Real so far.

Just how good is Vinicius Jr? Five key things to know…

  1. Vinicius scored 14 goals in 69 games for Flamengo, helping the club win the 2017 Campeonato Carioca.
  2. The 18-year-old made a reported £40.3m move to Real Madrid in the summer.
  3. Vinicius already has four goals for the Los Blancos first team, as well as four goals in five outings for their reserve side.
  4. Former Real striker, Morientes, compared the Brazilian to three-time Champions League winner, Savio.
  5. Vinicius scored the second goal in Real’s 3-0 win over Alaves on Sunday and started the recent Copa del Rey El Clasico.

The 18-year-old has scored four goals in 19 appearances for Los Blancos so far and has seriously impressed in recent weeks in the absence of Gareth Bale.

“We were all keen to see Vinicius play, to see how he develops. I think he’s a very impressive player, he’s very good in one-on-ones and making runs,” Morientes said of Vinicius, who scored in Real’s 3-0 win over Alaves on Sunday.

“He’s still very young, we need time to see the kind of player he will be but if he continues to play the way he is now he’ll be a world-class player, no doubt.

“We should give him time though, you can’t burden such a young player with too much responsibility especially at a club like Real Madrid.”

Morientes then compared Vinicius to Brazilian winger and former Real Madrid teammate, Savio, who won three Champions League titles with the club at the turn of the century.

“Obviously Savio was a little older but they have similar traits; daring, pace on the ball and one-on-one ability,” added Morientes.

“And they’re both Brazilians, of course. Both came from a very different football style in Brazil, but they adapted quickly.

“So I’d say Vinicius reminds me of Savio, for their playing style and their position out on the left.”

Solari: Vinicius is loved at Madrid

Morientes wasn’t the only one to praise Vinicius after his performance against Alaves, with manager Santiago Solari also joining in the praise for the young Brazilian.

Solari claimed Vinicius has the ‘”love and support” of his team-mates as well as lauding his showing against Alaves.

“He has done a great match, Vinicius, and was applauded from the [Santiago] Bernabeu,” Solari said.

“He is responding very well when he plays and in training. We are delighted with his arrival and his performances, and he always has the support of the mature players in the squad, who take care of him, love him and they advise him.”
