Anthony Martial can match Lionel Messi for ball control, says Sergio Romero

Only Barcelona‘s Lionel Messi is better at running with the ball than Anthony Martial according to his Manchester United team-mate Sergio Romero.

Martial has featured in 11 games so far this season, slowly playing his way into being a starter for United with a number of important goals.

The Frenchman’s future was initially in doubt over the summer, having been fined by Jose Mourinho for returning late to the club’s pre-season training camp after originally being given permission to leave for the birth of his child.

And, according to United’s backup goalkeeper Romero, Martial’s dribbling ability is second only to his compatriot and Barcelona forward Messi.

“He really is one of the best I’ve seen,” he told United’s official website.

“I think that the only player in the world, or who I’ve seen, running with the ball as if it’s stuck to his foot, is Leo Messi.

“He can be going at top speed and the ball is always right on the end of his foot, it never gets far away from his control. That’s why he can do all the things he does.

“But the thing that Anthony has which is quite similar is when he is running at top speed, he can stop the ball absolutely dead, in a split-second.

“That is the same as what Messi does. Leo will be running with the ball, on a mazy dribble, and then all of a sudden he’ll stop suddenly and change pace or change speed, or go the other side.

“Anthony can do that with ease and in fact, he has done it many times. He dribbles the ball one way, stops suddenly and then goes the other.”

Martial is United’s joint-top scorer in all competitions so far this season, with five goals alongside compatriot Paul Pogba, though at a lower rate of 127 minutes per goal.

The Frenchman has scored in the past three Premier League games for United and will be looking to add to his tally on Saturday when the Red Devils take on Bournemouth.
