Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Bayern Munich: Every player rated as champions lose

Borussia Dortmund moved seven points clear of Bayern Munich with a 3-2 win over the defending Bundesliga champions.

Bayern controlled the opening stages and took the lead after 26 minutes through former Dortmund man Robert Lewandowski.

The lead would last until just minutes after half-time as Manuel Neuer upended Marco Reus inside the box with the Dortmund man tucking away the resultant penalty.

But Bayern retook the lead shortly after with Lewandowski punishing his former side once more with a header.

Reus then got his second of the game to draw Dortmund level once more before substitute Paco Alcacer completed the comeback with a well-taken finish.

Here’s how the players rated in an explosive Klassiker.

Borussia Dortmund

Marwin Hitz – 6 – Could do nothing to prevent either of Lewandowski’s headers from close range but did well to keep Bayern at bay with early pressure.

Lukasz Piszczek – 7 – The elder statesman of the Dortmund defence, Piszczek had his work cut out for him up against Ribery but did well enough in the first half. Got forward more after the break and it was his cross finished brilliantly by Reus.

Manuel Akanji – 8 – Was very strong at the back, defending well to block Gnabry just as the German looked to trouble Hitz, sliding in before helping clear. Could not do anything, however, to prevent his side from going behind twice.

Dan-Axel Zagadou – 8 – Like Akanji, Zagadou enjoyed a good first half, keeping Bayern’s attacking machine at bay for the majority of the time.

Achraf Hakimi – 7 – The Real Madrid loanee had an impressive opening 45 minutes, having to keep an eye on both Gnabry and Kimmich but coming out relatively unscathed. However, his side was exploited in the build-up to Bayern’s second goal as gaps opened up.

Julian Weigl – 3 – A really poor first half from the German who looked on a lower level to the rest of his team-mates and opponents.

Axel Witsel – 7 – Had an okay start, but had to do the work of two for most of the first half with Weigl offering little help alongside him. Dahoud’s arrival at half-time helped Witsel’s performance grow which was really vital to Dortmund as they looked to take control. And it was his pass which set up Alcacer for the winner.

Jadon Sancho – 6 – Not the best first half for the young Englishman who really struggled to create anything down the right, and was dealt with well by Bayern’s defenders. But he showed signs of improvement after half-time, really using his pace well.

Mario Gotze – 6 – Playing the most advanced at the start, Gotze moved well off the ball and showed glimpses of his ability but did not have too much time to hurt his former side.

Jacob Bruun Larsen – 7 – Attacked the wing well, pinning Kimmich back but did not see his attacking intent result in anything in the first half. Got at his defenders better in the second half and was a big part in Dortmund’s comeback pressuring Bayern.

Marko Reus – 8 – Should have opened the scoring after 10 minutes, breaking through the Bayern defence but his shot was poor when one-on-one with Neuer. But got his chance from the spot just after half-time to draw Dortmund level. And was on hand once more with a swivelled finish from the edge of the area, giving Neuer no chance.

Substitutes:

Mahmoud Dahoud (For Weigl 46) – 7 – Brought stability to the Dortmund midfield after coming on at half-time.

Paco Alcacer (For Gotze 60) – 7 – Should have equalised after coming on from the bench, but wanted far too much time on the ball inside the area and was tackled. But the Spaniard scored the one which really mattered, beating the offside trap before running at Neuer and dinking the ball over the goalkeeper.

Thomas Delaney (For Bruun Larsen 82) – N/A – A late sub.

Bayern Munich

Manuel Neuer – 5 – Called upon to deny Reus in the opening 10 minutes and did so, though the save was easy. Had looked promising but showed his weakness shortly after half-time, conceding a penalty for a foul on Reus with the German dispatched the resultant spot-kick.

Joshua Kimmich – 7 – Attacking well, alongside Gnabry, but let his winger take more of the impetus, sitting near the edge of the Dortmund box for support rather than attacking. Defensively, brilliantly stopped the ball on the line after Reus had beaten Neuer.

Jerome Boateng – 7 – Did his job well despite seeing his side concede three goals, as he could do little to prevent any of them from happening.

Mats Hummels – 3 – The weak point of Bayern’s defence, with mistakes allowing Reus and Alcacer chances on goal though neither resulted in a goal, fortunately for Hummels. Hooked with 25 minutes left as Niko Kovac tried to tighten up.

David Alaba – 8 – The Austrian defender had a very good game both defensively and in attack. Combined well with Ribery down the left and kept Sancho frustrated, reading everything the youngster tried. Brilliantly denied Alcacer when the Spaniard should have equalised.

Javi Martinez – 7 – Defensively rigid, bossed the midfield battle with Weigl giving his opposite number very little luck. Had his work cut out for him in the second half though as Dortmund grew in confidence.

Leon Goretzka – 6 – Helped press Dortmund’s defence high and linked up well with Lewandowski early on but was perhaps outworked by his opponents when the going got tough.

Franck Ribery – 7 – Played like a man half his age, Ribery was a constant thorn in Dortmund’s side giving Sancho and Piszczek a busy match. But he tired as the game went on and could do little once Bayern were behind.

Serge Gnabry – 6 – Asked questions of the Dortmund defence with his dribbling but made his big impact in the first half with a cross, placed perfectly between the two centre-backs for Lewandowski. His influence fell as the game went on but it was a good match for the former Arsenal man.

Thomas Muller – 4 – Very quiet in the first half and a small, yet vital role in Bayern’s second goal was it only really part in the match.

Robert Lewandowski – 8 – Despite Bayern’s early pressure, Lewandowski struggled to really get into the game in the opening 20 minutes but it only took one chance for him to make his former side pay, with a good header from Gnabry’s cross. And as Dortmund had looked to take control after equalising, Lewandowski cropped up again to head in from close range.

Key stat: Robert Lewandowski has scored 14 times against Borussia Dortmund since leaving the club.

Substitutes:

Niklas Sule (For Hummels 65) – 6 – Did better than the man he replaced but had little to do late in the match as both side’s attacking style changed.

Renato Sanches (For Gnabry 74) – 5 – Brought on for fresh legs but did little to help his side get back into the match.

Sandro Wagner (For Muller 82) – N/A – A late sub.
