Crystal Palace 0-1 Spurs: Five things learned as Foyth makes amends

Tottenham Hotspur scrape a 1-0 victory against plucky Crystal Place on a soaking wet evening in south London.

Spurs were far from their best during Saturday’s evening’s kick-off. Their was a lethargy about Mauricio Pochettino’s men in the first half as they failed to mount any credible threat on Palace’s goal.

Then Spurs rode their luck at times in the second half. Palace had agitated the north Londoners in the final third, but seriously challenging Hugo Lloris’ goal never quite materialised until the end of the game.

Juan Foyth eventually broke the deadlock for the visitors with a header after 15 minutes of the second half; his effort was ultimately the match winner after a thrilling finish at both ends of the pitch.

Here are five things we learned from Saturday evening’s London derby.

1. Tripper could miss internationals

 

Kieran Tripper limped off after 25 minutes with an injury to his thigh. We are yet to learn the severity of the Englishman’s injury, but it could put his place in England’s upcoming internationals in doubt.

Trippier’s loss could be someone else’s gain with players like Trent Alexander-Arnold in terrific form for Liverpool at the moment. Kyle Walker, moreover, played on the right side of a back three for the Three Lions at the World Cup, but if Trippier is absent he could be restored to his preferred position at right back.

Trippier’s injury means that Nine of the 12 Spurs players to feature at the World Cup have suffered injuries so far this season.

2. Sissoko switched on in the first

Moussa Sissoko  was one of the few Spurs players who was trying to force an opener in a first half which Spurs’ star men Harry Kane and Dele All were very quiet.

Sissoko completed 12 attacking-third passes in the first half against Crystal Palace – twice as many passes as any other Spurs player at Selhurst Park.

The 29-year-old Frenchman was Tottenham’s best player by far and even inspired vociferous chants from visiting fans who sang his name at full volume. This must have been a welcome change for the midfielder, who is used to fans shouting at him in frustration.

Hugo Lloris is looking dodgy in goal

The Frenchman’s personal life has undergone some turbulence in recent months. He was fined £50,000 and banned for 20 months from driving after admitting to drink driving in September.

The imbalance in his personal life could be spilling onto the pitch as the shot-stopper looked like a shadow of his former self against Palace. In the second half the 31-year-old rushed out from his goal line to catch a cross, which he missed. luckily he got a second bite at the cherry and swiped the ball away before Palace could punish him.

Moments later the Frenchman cleared a ball straight into the path of Palace’s attacker – once again it was Eagles’ shortcomings that saved him here. Lloris may get some credit for his stop at the death, but the shot was hit straight at him.

4. Pochettino loves playing Palace

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has now won nine Premier League games against Crystal Palace – more wins than against any other side he has played against.

As the game was dragging on it looked like neither side would break the deadlock until Juan Foyth nodded home with half an hour to go.

Spurs’ win is the seventh consecutive time they have defeated Palace in the Premier League since losing 2-1 back in January 2015 and Spurs have now defeated Palace 1-0 in their last five meetings in the league.

5. Foyth makes amends

Juan Foyth had a torrid time on the road against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend when he conceded two penalties on his Premier League debut.

Spurs were protecting a very comfortable 3-0 lead in that game, but Wolves made the last stretch very interesting for the neutral viewer – and very tense for Spurs fans – as they converted both of their penalties.

The Argentine made up for it in spades at Selhurst Park; his nodded finish ending up the winner on a wet and windy evening in south London.
