Gary Neville sounded like a “privileged kid” during Spurs analysis, says Jermaine Jenas

Jermaine Jenas thinks Gary Neville sounded like a privileged kid after the former Manchester United captain criticised Tottenham Hotspur during a discussion on Sky Sports.

Neville claimed on Sky Sports that Spurs have been “flaky and “pathetic for 30 years, but described Mauricio Pochettino’s side as the “toughest and most resilient” he has ever seen.

Neville’s comments have enraged Spurs fans and others associated with the club, most notably former manager Harry Redknapp who said the pundit’s comments were a “disgrace.”

The former defender’s views also caused pushback from fellow pundit Jenas who spent eight years at White Hart Lane.

Jenas told the BBC that the 43-year-old “sounded like a privileged kid.”

“And that obviously bred success for a number of years and he lived it year in, year out,” Jenas added.

“At other clubs, there are different variants that you’re bringing in to the fold, which has a negative impact on the team.”

Jenas thought that Neville’s unsuccessful managerial spell with La Liga side Valencia, where the former United man was sacked after only 29 games in charge, would have provided him with a better perspective on life outside of the Old Trafford bubble.

“I actually felt like the one thing he would have gained from his experience as a manger is what life is like outside that Manchester United bubble,” he said.

“At other clubs, players are striving to be at the best clubs in Europe. That’s what he had as a player but he didn’t have it as a manager.”

Spurs lost last 1-0 to Manchester City in the Premier League last Monday, in a fiercely contested game at Wembley Stadium. Prior and during the game there was renewed discussion in the press over Spurs’ finances and Pochettino’s growing frustration with the club’s recruitment policy.

Neville and Jamie Carragher got into a semi-row over this topic on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme.

Carragher insists that Spurs could spend more money on new signings while Neville praised the clubs transfer policies, pointing out that the club had just shelled out hundreds of millions of pounds on a new stadium.

Spurs travel to the Molineux Stadium on Saturday evening to face Wolves in the Premier League.
