Guardiola hopes Diaz won’t be another Jadon Sancho

Pep Guardiola is hoping Brahim Diaz follows in the footsteps of Phil Foden by remaining at Manchester City, rather than Jadon Sancho who left the club to join Borussia Dortmund

The 19-year-old Spaniard, who has been on the books at the Etihad since joining from Malaga’s youth team in 2013, made a real impression on Thursday, scoring twice in City’s 2-0 League Cup win over Fulham.

That was the Spain youth international’s 14th professional appearance for the Citizens since making his debut for the club back in September 2016 and Guardiola has stressed that he would like Diaz to remain at the club beyond this season, despite being linked with Real Madrid as his contract ends this summer.

“We want him, yeah,” Guardiola confirmed (via Sky Sports). “If there is an offer on the table, I don’t know because I am not involved in that.

“When I spoke with the sporting director Txiki [Begiristain], we talked about the player and what is our idea. We share our ideas. Sometimes we agree, sometimes not.

“After that is disappear and they make the process so really I don’t know.

“But the fact is we want him, like happened with Tosin [Adarabioyo] in the past, Lukas Nmecha or Phil Foden.

“With all the young players we believe in our perspective, we believe in our perspective.

“We want them to stay for longer because of course when they are 17, 18 or 19 years old, they are not already a football player.”

With so many star talents coming to the Premier League every year, many youngsters are finding more success and helping their development by moving abroad.

One such case is the English youngster Sancho, who joined Borussia Dortmund in 2017 despite Pep Guardiola wanting to keep him at Manchester City.

Since his move to Germany, Sancho, 18, has been a huge success and has started the new season in fine form, scoring five goals and providing seven assists already, earning his first senior England call-up in the process.

And Guardiola has admitted that he wanted to keep hold of Sancho but holds no hard feelings toward the player.

The City boss said: “In the case of Jadon Sancho, we wanted him but he did not want to stay. What can we do? Nothing. So good luck and all the best. It is a market. It is what it is.”

Guardiola’s City take on Southampton on Sunday in a bid to continue their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season.
