Watford‘s Abdoulaye Doucoure would be an “absolutely sensational signing” for Liverpool, according to former midfielder Jan Molby.
Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Liverpool, have been linked to signing Doucoure who has been valued at around £50 million by the Hornets.
The 25-year-old French midfielder is playing very well and could be ready for a move to a big club. Doucoure has appeared in all 10 of Watford’s Premier League fixtures this season and has created four goals for his team mates while also boasting a pass-completion rate of 81.4%.
Molby, who made 218 appearances for the Reds between 1984 and 1996, says he is a big fan of the midfielder and can see why his former club would be interested in him.
“I can absolutely see why Liverpool are being linked with Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure,” Molby wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo.
“I’m a big fan of his and have been for a few years now.
“Doucoure is a modern-day midfielder. He covers the ground very, very quickly but there’s a lot more to his game than that.”
Despite the high praise, Molby admitted every time he has seen the midfielder play he has looked sloppy but believes Liverpool could be the remedy for that.
He added: “The way to sharpen him up is to train and play with better players. He’d have that at Liverpool.
“Sometimes when you look at players, you are looking at potential, and I think there is untapped potential in Doucoure’s game.”
Even though Jurgen Klopp’s side boasts a wealth of midfield talent including the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, James Milner as well as new signings Fabinho and Naby Keita, Molby still wants more from the Reds in the middle of the park.
“Midfield is the one area where maybe I’m looking for a little bit more than what we have at present,” Molby added.
“And signing Doucoure would take a lot of risks out of play. He’s already played in the Premier League, he has settled into life in England, and those things are important.
“I think he would be an absolutely sensational signing.”
Liverpool have enjoyed an excellent start to their Premier League campaign. They’re undefeated in 10 games and are level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table.
The Reds will have their undefeated run tested to the max during Saturday’s late-afternoon kick-off, as they travel to the Emirates to face a reinvigorated Arsenal side who are themselves unbeaten in 13 games across all competitions.
