How does Sergio Aguero compare to other Premier League legends of the 150 club?

Since joining Manchester City in 2011, Sergio Aguero has gone on to become one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen.

Helping the Cityzens to three Premier League titles so far, Aguero has scored more than 20 goals in five seasons including the past four consecutive, only failing to reach the mark on two occasions.

And, after seven years in the division, the Argentine has joined an elite club of Premier League goalscorers reaching 150 goals.

Up against struggling Southampton, Aguero’s 150th was arguably one of his easiest goals to score, tapping into the empty net following good wide play from Man City.

But how does Aguero compare to the other eight players to have scored 150 goals in the Premier League? Who reached it in the fewest amount of games? Who was the youngest to do so? Read on to find out exactly that.

9. Frank Lampard

Appearances needed: 520

Age achieved: 33 years, 9 months, 20 days

Goals inside area: 115

Goals outside area: 35

Penalties scored: 37

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given his position, Lampard has taken the longest about of time of any player to score 150 goals in the Premier League. Also unsurprisingly, the Englishman did so with 37 penalties and an impressive 35 from outside the area, reaching the landmark in a draw with Fulham in 2012.

8. Jermain Defoe

Appearances needed: 443

Age achieved: 34 years, 1 month, 12 days

Goals inside area: 128

Goals outside area: 22

Penalties scored: 12

The most recent player to score 150 goals in the Premier League, prior to Aguero, Defoe has scored for five clubs in the division – West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Bournemouth.

Defoe’s 150th came against in a 3-0 win for Sunderland over Hull City in November 2016, though the result would not stop the Black Cats from being relegated at the end of the season.

7. Robbie Fowler

Appearances needed: 333

Age achieved: 29 years, 10 months, 19 days

Goals inside area: 129

Goals outside area: 21

Penalties scored: 14

Fowler was a frightening striker at the start of his Liverpool career and had the Premier League in the palm of his hands before a serious injury brought it all to a halt.

But that did not stop the English striker reaching 150 goals, netting an equalisre for Manchester City against Norwich City in February 2005.

6. Wayne Rooney

Appearances needed: 330

Age achieved: 27 years, 1 month, 15 days

Goals inside area: 134

Goals outside area: 16

Penalties scored: 14

The Premier League’s second highest goalscorer of all time, scoring 208 goals for Manchester United and Everton, Rooney reached his 150th with a double against rivals Manchester City in December 2012 – a result which went some way to helping United to the Premier League title, their final one.

5. Michael Owen

Appearances needed: 323

Age achieved: 33 years, 1 month, 5 days

Goals inside area: 141

Goals outside area: 9

Penalties scored: 14

After a storming start to his career at Liverpool, injuries and some misguided moves saw Owen just about reach 150 goals in the Premier League – finishing on that number.

His 150th, and final goal, came in January 2013 for Stoke City scoring a consolation goal in injury time against Swansea City.

4. Andy Cole

Appearances needed: 286

Age achieved: 31 years, 2 months, 13 days

Goals inside area: 136

Goals outside area: 14

Penalties scored: 0

Amazingly, Cole reached his 150 goal mark without scoring a single penalty – the only player on his list to do so. Playing for Newcastle United, Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers, the Englishman scored his 150th goal for the latter against West Ham in December 2002.

3. Thierry Henry

Appearances needed: 220

Age achieved: 28 years, 4 months, 28 days

Goals inside area: 125

Goals outside area: 25

Penalties scored: 19

Bringing style to the Premier League, Henry is often referred to as one of the most complete strikers in the modern era of English football. And the Frenchman brought up his 150 goal mark in style, with a hat-trick against Middlesbrough in January 2006 – his 220th Premier League appearances for the Gunners.

2. Sergio Aguero

Appearances needed: 217

Age achieved: 30 years, 5 months, 2 days

Goals inside area: 132

Goals outside area: 18

Penalties scored: 22

Already Manchester City’s record goalscorer in all competitions, Aguero reached 150 goals just three games faster than Henry did for Arsenal.

In doing so, Aguero also became just the third player to score 150 Premier League goals for a single side after Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney.

1. Alan Shearer

Appearances needed: 212

Age achieved: 28 years, 8 months, 4 days

Goals inside area: 127

Goals outside area: 23

Penalties scored: 26

The Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer, Shearer was also the quickest player to reach 150 goals in the division, needing just 212 appearances.

Shearer scored 260 goals in total, for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, with his 150th coming in a 3-1 defeat to Everton for the Magpies on April 17, 1999.
