Players out of contract at the end of this season? It’s getting towards that tetchy stage of the campaign where worries start to creep in if some of your teams’ players still haven’t extended.
A quick bit of research and you’ll find that there are some top class players that are in the final year of their contracts this season.
There has already been a lot of speculation regarding potential January moves for some of these players? Would your club rather get a fee for a player that wants out than lose them on a free next summer?
These players are in the final year of their current deals for a variety of reasons. Maybe they want out, maybe the manager wants them out or maybe they just haven’t been able to agree terms on a new contract yet?
Nevertheless, time is running out for players and clubs to reach agreements if they’re to stay put beyond this season.
We’ve put together a combined XI of the players that are set to become available on free transfers next summer. Look out for our subs bench, too.
Goalkeeper – David De Gea (Manchester United)
Yep, this is not good news for Manchester United fans. Not good at all.
De Gea is one of a number of United players that are out of contract this summer.
However, some of these players, including De Gea, have a clause in their current deals that automatically triggers an extra year once this deal has expired. For that reason, the Spanish stopper is unlikely to be available on a free next June.
Talks over a new deal are said to be at a standstill, though, and could you really blame De Gea for considering his options at the moment?
Right-back – Dani Alves (PSG)
Alves has been sidelined since may having ruptured his cruciate knee ligaments.
He’s 35 now but his performances for PSG prior to his injury were still of a very high level.
As well as that, Brazilian legend Cafu, probably one of the best right-back’s of all time, has recently gone on record as saying that Alves is still one of the best three right-backs in world football.
The former Barcelona and Juventus star is fluent in English and recently said he’d like to play in the Premier League before the end of his career.
Centre-back – Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)
What a servant this man has been to Atletico Madrid.
However, it’s looking more and more like the Uruguayan will be leaving the La Liga giants this summer and he won’t be short of interest.
Godin has been made captain of Diego Simeone’s side this season but is yet to extend his contract, citing ‘personal reasons’ as his reasoning back in August.
AC Milan, Juventus and Manchester United have all been linked with moves for the 32-year-old.
Centre-back – Toby Alderweireld (Spurs)
Many expected Alderweireld to leave Spurs last summer having been overlooked by manager Mauricio Pochettino on a number of occasions last season.
However, despite speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United, the Belgian ended up staying put.
This season he’s playing regular football again, but his existing deal expires next summer.
Left-back – Jan Vertonghen (Spurs)
Vertonghen is, of course, Alderweireld’s centre-back partner at Spurs, but we’ve fitted him into this side at left-back.
Having both of Spurs’ star defenders in the final year of their contracts is a huge worry for the club.
You can sympathise with both players for assessing their options. How much further can this Spurs side go? Can they really compete for the title in the coming years?
Central midfield – Adrien Rabiot (PSG)
PSG are said to have tried and failed to tie Rabiot down to a new contract on a number of occasions in the last 12 months.
Rabiot’s agent is his mother and she’s been keen to make sure that the Frenchman is being given regular opportunities to impress with the French champions.
A host of Europe’s top clubs have been linked with the 23-year-old and it seems likely that he’ll be on the move at the end of this season.
Central midfield – Mousa Dembele (Spurs)
Another Spurs player and a very good one, at that.
Dembele has been with Spurs since 2012 but it appears his time in North London is now coming to an end.
He was linked with a move to China last summer, something he’s talked up in the past, so don’t be surprised to see him become the latest European star to head out there next year.
Attacking midfield – Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal)
Ramsey looks nailed on to leave Arsenal next summer after being told by Unai Emery that he is not part of his future plans.
The Welshman claims that the Gunners had offered him a new deal that he was happy to sign months ago, but that was withdrawn when Emery’s thoughts emerged.
The 27-year-old is probably entering his prime years now and won’t be short of interest. Recent reports suggest that Bayern Munich are the frontrunners to secure his signature.
Right wing – Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich)
Robben is one of a number of senior players at Bayern that are expected to move on this summer, with the club’s owners recently claiming that they will ‘freshen up’ the team for next season.
18-year-old Canadian Alphonso Davies recently arrived at the club and is one of the players that Robben is expected to make way for.
The Dutchman is 34 now but has still managed three goals in eight Bundesliga outings so far this season.
Left wing – Anthony Martial (Manchester United)
This is one of the most interesting contract situations in Europe at the moment.
Martial is said to have wanted out of Manchester United last summer and his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho was becoming increasingly strained.
No move was forthcoming, though, and the Frenchman is now in excellent form for the Red Devils having scored six goals since the start of October.
Earlier this season it was suggested that Martial was set to sign a new deal, but that has happened yet. Has the winger finally got into his groove at Old Trafford, or will he seek a new challenge next summer?
Striker – Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)
Sturridge is another player that has shone this season after suggestions that he would move on last summer.
The striker had a nightmare loan spell at West Brom at the end of last season and has been plagued by injury issues throughout the last few years.
However, Sturridge knuckled down over the summer and is yet to pick up any kind of injury this season. He’s scored some vital goals for the Reds this year, but can he do enough to earn a new deal?
Jurgen Klopp may decide that the 29-year-old’s time at Anfield has come to an end, with promising youngsters Dominic Solanke and Rhian Brewster looking to break through in the coming years.
Substitutes: Petr Cech, Nacho Monreal, Antonio Valencia, Daniele De Rossi, Cesc Fabregas, Franck Ribery, Olivier Giroud.
