Alisson and Fabinho squad numbers officially confirmed as Liverpool submit 2018/19 squad list

Liverpool were among the clubs to submit their official squad numbers to the Premier League on Monday, with the Reds finally confirming squad numbers for new signings Alisson Becker and Fabinho.

Alisson, who wore the number 1 shirt at Roma, was given the number 13 shirt for Liverpool’s final two pre-season friendlies, with Loris Karius the current owner of the number 1 jersey.

At the time, Liverpool remained tight-lipped on whether 13 would be Alisson’s number for the season ahead, but that has now been confirmed, as has Fabinho’s, who will wear the number 3 shirt for 2018/19.

Fabinho wore the number 2 shirt with Monaco, a number which is currently occupied by Nathaniel Clyne at Liverpool. Other new signings Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri are to wear the number 8 and number 23 shirts, respectively.

New season, new numbers

Liverpool were expected to give the number 10 shirt, which has been vacant since Philippe Coutinho’s departure, to Nabil Fekir this summer, only for his proposed move from Lyon to break down.

Instead, Sadio Mané has opted to take the number 10 shirt, meaning that Liverpool’s front three of Roberto Firmino, Mané and Mohamed Salah will all wear consecutive numbers. Firmino took the number 9 shirt last summer, Mané has taken on the number 10 and Mohamed Salah is number 11.

Another interesting change to this season’s squad numbers has seen young striker Rhian Brewster take on the number 24 shirt. Brewster was widely expected to leave the club this summer, with the 18-year-old said to have been considering a move to Germany in search of first-team football.

But Brewster is a player that Jürgen Klopp rates very highly and the striker, who played a star role in England’s U17 World Cup triumph, has been promised first-team opportunities when he returns from injury later this season. He has penned a new long-term contract at the club and is now a mainstay with the first-team squad at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground.
