Every player rated as Ronaldo hat-trick inspires Juventus to comeback win over Atletico Madrid

A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick inspired Juventus to a 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

The victory sealed a remarkable comeback after losing the first leg 2-0 in Madrid, firing Juventus through to the quarter-finals, while Diego Simeone was consigned to his first-ever defeat to Italian opposition as a manager.

Here is how every player rated on a historic night in Turin.

Juventus

Wojciech SzczÄ™sny – 6 – A very quiet night for SzczÄ™sny as Juve spent most of the night camped in the Atletico half. Safe on the very, very rare occasions he was called upon.

Joao Cancelo – 8 – A fantastic performance at right-back from Cancelo as he bombed on and stopped any kind of expansion from Lemar and Juanfran. A crossing machine, he got a deserved assist for Ronaldo’s second.

Leonardo Bonucci – 7 – Gobbled up everything that came his way with four aerial duels won – Morata and Griezmann could barely get a sniff.

Giorgio Chiellini – 7 – It’s a very begrudging 7/10, given his pathetic antics with Morata in the second half. However, won 100% of his aerial duels and was the rock he’s always been for Juve at the back.

Leonardo Spinazzola – 8 – A brilliant outlet for Juve down their left-hand side, keeping Koke pinned on top of Santiago Arias with his aggressively high positioning and dribbling. Delivered cross after cross for Ronaldo and Mandzukic. Unlucky to be brought off after 67 minutes, although he looked to be tiring.

Emre Can – 8 – Won more aerial duels (5) than any Juve player tonight and whether it was in midfield or filling in at full-back, he looked calm, assured and dominant.

Miralem Pjanic – 7 – Made a match-high 68 accurate passes and was a metronome in the middle as Juve kept Atletico stuck in the mud inside their own half.

Blaise Matuidi – 8 – No player made more tackles than Matuidi (6) and the Frenchman was superb in attack and defence. A perfect all-rounder in midfield.

Federico Bernardeschi – 8 – Delivered a brilliant cross for Ronaldo’s first and was a constant thorn in Atletico’s side throughout. Was surprising to see him start ahead of Dybala but he vindicated Allegri’s decision with an excellent performance.

Mario Manduzkic – 6 – Quieter than the likes of Ronaldo and Bernardeschi but still proved to be a battering ram up front for Juve, winning three aerial duels. He and Ronaldo caused Atletico’s usually dominant back four all sorts of problems overloading the far post.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 9 – Wow. Just wow. Ronaldo absolutely loves the Champions League, the big occasion and just about anything else the footballing world can throw at him. Showed aerial dominance and an ice-cool nerve to sting Atletico once again with a hat-trick. If we’re being really, really cruel, he occasionally tried to do too much, completing 71% of his dribbles. But we must stress, we’re picking the smallest holes possible with that.

Subs:

Paulo Dybala (67 mins for Spinazzola) – 6 – Didn’t quite have the effect his forward partners did once he got on the pitch but was by no means a weak link.

Moise Kean (80 mins for Mandzukic) – 5 – Could have put his name in lights but scuffed a great chance wide of the post. He didn’t pay for it, though, as Ronaldo sealed the win anyway.

Atletico Madrid

Jan Oblak – 5 – Faced four shots on target and only managed to save three of them, although he was unlucky as Ronaldo’s second barely made it over the line.

Santiago Arias – 6 – Everything may have come down Juve’s left but Arias gave has good as he got, making a match-high six tackles and winning two aerial duels. Did as well as he could as Spinazzola and co overloaded Atletico’s right. Replaced by Vitolo after 77 minutes.

Jose Gimenez – 6 – Kept Juve at bay with some last-ditch defending and three aerial battles won. Just couldn’t quite deal with the storm cooked up by the Old Lady.

Diego Godin – 6 – Had a bit of a dog’s life in the air with Ronaldo, but still threw his body on the line to try and keep Atletico in it.

Juanfran – 4 – Absolutely dominated at the back post for Ronaldo’s opener and had a really tough night up against the Portuguese. Finally looking like a 34-year-old.

Koke – 6 – Tried his best to cover Arias as Spinazzola pushed incredibly high, making four tackles. Couldn’t influence the game going forward as a result.

Rodrigo – 7 – Some great last-ditch defending and was about the best Atleti player on the ball on Tuesday, posting a 90% pass success rate.

Saul – 7 – Great cross for Morata’s miss at the end of the first half. Like his teammates, had to spend more time trying to stay in defensive shape than creating for Atletico.

Thomas Lemar – 5 – Very quiet night going forward as the Frenchman was more concerned with trying to help Juanfran deal with Cancelo and Bernardeschi. Quite wasteful with his passing and hooked after 57 minutes.

Antoine Griezmann – 6 – It’s unusual and frustrating to see Griezmann forced to defend so much. Starved of service up top but did his bit by making two tackles.

Alvaro Morata – 4 – Oh, how costly that miss looks now. Has to do better with his free header shortly before half-time, which was his only telling contribution of the night.

Subs:

Angel Correa (57 mins for Lemar) –  3 – Replaced Lemar just before the hour mark but was unable to have a telling influence – apart from the small matter of pushing Bernardeschi for the penalty.

Vitolo (77 mins for Arias) – 6 – Came on late and was unable to turn the tide.
