Liverpool will soon have one of ‘the world’s best’ throw-in specialists to call upon

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is among the best throw-in takers in the world, according to specialist Thomas Gronnemark.

The Reds have improved their effectiveness from throw-ins this season, with Gomez and Andy Robertson both praised for their technique.

Who is Thomas Gronnemark? Five key things to know…

  1. Gronnemark is a throw-in specialist hired by Liverpool to improve that specific area of their game.
  2. The Dane is the world record holder for the longest throw-in and a former member of the Denmark bobsled team.
  3. He has also been hired by clubs in the Danish top-flight and the Bundesliga.
  4. Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez have been the main benefactors of Gronnemark’s arrival.
  5. The 43-year-old has been handed a contract until the end of the season.

Gomez provided an assist with a throw-in for England against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League last year.

And Gronnemark has spoken of his delight with Gomez’s improvement since the pair started working together.

“I’m very proud that he [Gomez] assisted an important goal with a throw-in during the Nations League game between England and Croatia. His throw-ins belong to the best in the world,” Gronnemark told Goal.

“When I started working at Liverpool some media had laugh about me but after the England game everybody praises me. Even journalists from the U.S. and Argentina wanted to talk to me.

“[Robertson] started with throw-ins of only 19-20 meters which is quite short for a full-back. It’s very dangerous to throw that short as a full-back because there is always pressure for the teammate who gets the ball.

“But he improved a lot and is able to throw about 27 metres now, which is a great improvement. He is very smart and has much more options now. I’m very proud of him.”

I was shocked when Klopp called me – Gronnemark

According to Goal, Gronnemark has served a six-month probationary period at Liverpool and has now been handed a contract until the end of the season.

He went on to explain how he was surprised to get the initial call from Jurgen Klopp.

“I was in the car and when Klopp first called me I’ve missed it. After hearing Jurgen on my voicemail, I was shocked. He invited me to a meeting in Melwood,” Gronnemark added.

“After the meeting, he was thrilled and wanted to work with me. Since June, I work as a coach for Liverpool and I am living my dream.

“I love the work with Klopp and the team. It’s fantastic. Jurgen is a great leader and the whole team is very helpful. The working atmosphere is awesome.”
