Sevilla have announced the return of Monchi as the club’s sporting director despite heavy links with position at Arsenal.
The 50-year-old Spaniard has taken up his former role at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium having previously worked with the club for 17 years.
Why has Monchi returned to Sevilla? Five key things to know…
- Having played for Los Hispalenses during his playing career Monchi took up a role as the club’s sporting director in 2000.
- He helped oversee the development of key players such as Sergio Ramos and Dani Alves.
- As such, Sevilla won 11 trophies during his tenure, before he left the club for Roma in April 2017.
- His time in the Italian capital came to an end earlier this month following the sacking of Eusebio Di Francesco.
- Monchi was linked with a move to Arsenal but he has now returned for his second spell with Sevilla.
Monchi was tipped to fill the void left by Sven Mslintat in north London following the German’s sudden departure in January.
The Spaniard has previously worked alongside Arsenal manager Unai Emery during their time together with Sevilla between 2013 and 2016.
However, the Spanish club dismissed head coach Pablo Machin after their Europa League exit on Thursday with director of football Joaquin Caparros taking control of the first team.
Sevilla president Jose Castro confirmed on Friday that the club held positive talks with the transfer guru and have now confirmed his reappointment.

Sevilla confirmed the appointment on their Twitter account on Sunday, writing: “Monchi has come home.”
The 50-year-old also took to social media to express his delight in reviving his previous 29-year association with the club, writing: “The heart never forgets the place where it left its best beats.”

Monchi departed Roma earlier this month following a tumultuous season alongside Eusebio Di Francesco.
Monchi’s previous spell with Sevilla
Monchi forged a formidable reputation for his shrewd transfer policy in Andalusia, unearthing some of world football’s finest hidden gems, eventually selling them for a huge profit.
The likes of Sergio Ramos, Dani Alves and Ivan Rakitic all passed through the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium before moving on to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.
The former goalkeeper also oversaw the purchases and eventual sales of Julio Baptista, Federico Fazio, Seydou Keita, Carlos Bacca and Geoffrey Kondogbia.
It is, therefore, no wonder the club clinched 11 major trophies, including two Copa del Reys and a record five Europa League titles during his time at the club.
This will now come as a huge blow for Arsenal with the club continuing their own search for a sporting director.
The club’s head of football, Raul Sanllehi, is currently is charge of finding Mslintat’s replacement, and was believed to have identified Monchi as his number one target, but will now have to look elsewhere.
