Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel isn’t worried by being overtaken by Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table.
Dortmund had led the way since September but a loss of form and a serious turnaround in fortunes for Bayern has seen the two fierce rivals switch places on goal difference.
Can Dortmund dethrone Bayern? Four key things to know…
- Having topped the Bundesliga table since September, Dortmund were overtaken by Bayern at the weekend.
- The Bavarians beat Wolfsburg 6-0, exceeding Dortmund’s goal difference after they could only beat Stuttgart 3-1.
- Bayern’s turnaround has largely been thanks to Lewandowski, who has 22 direct goal involvements in 20 games.
- However, Dortmund’s Axel Witsel says being behind on goal difference at this stage ‘doesn’t matter’.
However, with nine games still to play, Witsel is confident they can keep pace with the Bavarians, with the two locking horns once again in April.
“We have to take it game by game,” Witsel told bundesliga.com after Dortmund’s win over VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. “We have to stay tight with Bayern until we go to Munich – after that we’ll see who’s top.”
This switching of positions at the top of the Bundesliga was thanks to Bayern’s 6-0 thrashing of Wolfsburg on Saturday, with Dortmund only managing a 3-1 win over Stuttgart.
But Witsel insists Bayern scoring more goals at this stage ‘doesn’t matter’.
“For me, it doesn’t matter,” Witsel stated. “I think they’ve scored more goals than us but we have the same points and we need to stay tight before we go to Munich. We have two or three games before that. We’ll take it game by game and then we’ll see.
“We’re still in the race with nine more games to go. Not everything went our way over the last few weeks, we were missing a bit of luck, we had a lot of opportunities we didn’t score. Today we scored three goals so I think this is really positive for the future.”
Dortmund are away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

Bayern’s incredible turnaround
After struggling at the start of this season, Bayern have now won 12 of their last 13 games and are on a seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
This remarkable upturn in form is largely thanks to the form of Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski, who has now been directly involved in 22 goals in his last 20 Bayern games.
Sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, has hailed Bayern’s attacking prowess, as well as their ‘compact defensive performances’ of late.
“We have achieved a lot of momentum at the right time of the season,” said Salihamidzic. “We’ve scored 11 goals in the last two games and put in compact defensive performances.”
