“I want to watch it back 500 times” – The Liverpool moment v Bayern Klopp can’t wait to see again

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed Sadio Mane for his two goals which helped the Reds reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Klopp’s men went into Wednesday’s second leg with Bayern level after a goalless draw at Anfield and took control of the tie when Mane put them ahead after 25 minutes.

What was so special about Mane’s goal? Five key things to know…

  1. Liverpool held the slight advantage going into Wednesday’s second leg against Bayern Munich, having kept a clean sheet at home.
  2. And Sadio Mane made good of this advantage, scoring a vital away goal 25 minutes into the game at the Allianz Arena.
  3. The Senegalese beat both Manuel Neuer and Rafinha with an exquisite turn on the edge of the area, before sending the ball into the empty net.
  4. And Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted he will have to watch it back “500 times”.
  5. Liverpool are now one of four English teams in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

A precious away goal, Mane beautifully took the ball down following a long pass from Virgil van Dijk before beating both Rafinha and Manuel Neuer to silence the home crowd.

And Klopp, who spent seven years at Bayern’s rivals Borussia Dortmund, has admitted he will be watching the opener again.

“The first goal, fantastic,” he told BT Sport after the match.

“I will have to watch it back 500 times. It is outstanding what he is doing there.

“It was really difficult for Bayern and we are in the quarter-finals, which is amazing.”

Bayern did manage to equalise 15 minutes later as Joel Matip put the ball into the own net, but second-half goals from Van Dijk and Mane sealed the win for Liverpool.

The Reds became the first English team to beat Bayern in Germany since Chelsea did so in the 2012 Champions League final and joined Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City in representing the Premier League in the quarter-finals.

This is the first time since 2008/09 four English teams have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. In that instance, three made it through to the semi-finals and Manchester United eventually finished runners-up.

Klopp just happy to beat Bayern with Liverpool

Given Klopp’s previous rivalry with Bayern from his time at Borussia Dortmund, it was expected the German would have extra incentive to beat the Bundesliga champions.

But, speaking after the game, Klopp insisted his thoughts were only on beating Bayern with Liverpool – and not about his Dortmund ties.

He said: “I didn’t just want to beat Bayern. I wanted to win with Liverpool. I am sure I will have a lot of fans happy from Dortmund and if I can help them, then that’s great too.

“It is a wonderful Champions League night for Liverpool again and that’s good. Somebody will play against somebody in the next game. The boys love this competition. They dig in and I like it. The desire was outstanding. All good!”
