Shaw and Dalot can learn from Liverpool full-backs – Hargreaves

Manchester United pair Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot can learn from Liverpool full-backs Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to Owen Hargreaves.

Shaw has been in impressive form for Manchester United at the start of this season, nailing down the left-back spot and even earning a recall to the England squad.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Dalot, signed from Porto for £19 million over the summer, finally made his debut for the Red Devils in their 3-0 Champions League win over Swiss champions Young Boys.

Both players put in strong performances, but Hargreaves believes they should be looking to emulate their Merseyside counterparts and push for more.

“At that time (of Shaw breaking his leg), he was flying,” Hargreaves said on BT Sport (via Manchester Evening News). “He was exceptional in that left-back position. So I think to come back from that takes time.

“The one thing, even [Louis] van Gaal criticised a bit, was maybe his work ethic at times.

“That comes from training every day, you’ve got to show the manager that you want (to play).

“He’s probably been one of United’s best players this season so far.

“Maybe the young United full-backs can emulate the two terrific full-backs from Liverpool – Robertson and Alexander-Arnold.”

And, focussing on Dalot’s debut performance, the former-Manchester United and England midfielder added: “This kid I like, he’s got something. He’s a terrific crosser of the ball, look at that for a cross.

“Technically he’s quite good as well, we saw some step-overs in there as well.”

Despite Shaw’s first-team success this season, it remains to be seen whether Dalot will also take control of the right-back spot in the coming months.

However, the Portuguese youngster is seen as the long-term successor to 33-year-0ld Antonio Valencia.

United are currently eighth in the Premier League table, with their next game coming against newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
