Marco Silva refuses to rule out dropping Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford

Everton manager Marco Silva has not ruled out dropping goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after his poor showing against Newcastle United last Saturday.

Pickford was fortunate not to have been sent for an early bath when he conceded a penalty which he ended up saving, adding to Newcastle fans’ fury.

Will Pickford be dropped? Five things to know…

  1. Jordan Pickford is England and Everton’s first-choice goalkeeper.
  2. But the 25-year-old had a game to forget between the sticks against Newcastle.
  3. He conceded a penalty, gave away a goal and appeared distracted by chants from the Newcastle crowd.
  4. Pickford faced a lot of criticism, with Alan Shearer describing his performance as “bizarre and ridiculous“.
  5. England manager Gareth Southgate rushed to defend Pickford, but stopped short of guaranteeing his place with the Three Lions.

But then the England international parried a shot which led to Newcastle scoring and the former Sunderland goalkeeper seemed to let his emotions get the better of him when being teased by home fans.

This has led to conversation over whether the Englishman should be dropped, and Silva has admitted nobody is guaranteed a spot in his team.

“We have 23 players and all of them are under consideration by the coach,” he told reporters.

“It is normal. Not just the defenders, not just the midfielders or the forwards. But with goalkeepers it is the same.

“I said to you, of course Jordan was until now our no.1 choice because he deserves it and he has the quality to be there. But I have the same confidence in Maarten (Stekelenburg).

“Joao (Virginia) is a little bit younger but all three are working extremely hard and I have to take the decision again for the next match.”

Silva also confirmed he still has confidence and Pickford and wants to work with him to improve in the future.

He added: “I understand what people are saying about Jordan but Jordan has all my confidence, like Maarten and Joao Virginia.

“He has the confidence of our goalkeeping coach which is important also and he will keep working with him to give him all the conditions to keep growing as a goalkeeper – to keep growing his emotional balance during matches and to get better every day.

“He has to understand that in some moments during a career everyone is happy with you, in some moments people speak not so well about you. It’s normal in football.

“These people who are writing and saying something about you are the same people who eight, nine, 10 months ago were celebrating Jordan’s good performances.

“It’s part of football.”

Pickford gets more stick after Xbox brag

Pickford got himself in more hot water after his dire performance at St James’ Park. The 25-year-old “innocently” posted a picture of a special edition Xbox controller he’d received, but that controller was red, the colour of Everton’s rivals Liverpool.

Realising his unacceptable error, after a barrage of angry tweets from Everton fans, Pickford dutifully deleted the post.

He should have learned a lesson from former manager Ronald Koeman, who endured similar scrutiny in 2016 when his Christmas tree had more red than Toffees fans could handle.
