Jurgen Klopp reveals what not to expect from Liverpool in the next transfer window

Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool supporters to not expect big money signings in the summer.

The Reds are currently fighting on two fronts. Klopp’s men are vying with Manchester City to end a 29-year championship wait and have an upcoming Champions League quarter-final date with FC Porto.

Liverpool under Klopp. Five things to know…

  1. Liverpool appointed Jurgen Klopp as manager in October 2015.
  2. He’s since overseen 195 matches winning 107 and losing just 36 times.
  3. Under him the Reds have registered 403 goals and conceded 205.
  4. He’s guided Liverpool to three finals – 2016 League Cup (v Man City), 2016 Europa League (v Sevilla) and 2018 Champions League (v Real Madrid) – albeit losing in each of them.
  5. Klopp has used 61 players with Virgil van Dijk (£75m) the most expensive signing during his tenure.

Since being appointed in October 2015 the former Borussia Dortmund manager has firmly established Liverpool as one of English football’s leading clubs.

Part of their success has been down to excellent work in the transfer market. Competing against Chelsea and both Manchester clubs, though, forced the Reds to dip into their pockets and under Klopp’s tenure they’ve signed three players for more than £40m: Alisson (£55.5m), Naby Keïta (£52.75m) and Virgil van Dijk (£70m).

Klopp, who is aiming to end Liverpool’s 29-year championship wait, has rubber stamped the club’s recent business in the window and has warned fans not to expect them splashing the cash.

“I don’t want to talk exactly what we will do, but I don’t think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money or whatever,” he told reporters.

“The best way to do it is to bring together a group of players, try to develop them all together and then stay together for a while. And that was maybe the main problem of Liverpool for the last decade. When they had a good team after a season they went all over the world. That will not happen this year, for sure.”

Squeaky bum time

With eight matches remaining in the Premier League this season Liverpool find themselves one point behind leaders and defending champions Manchester City.

Liverpool were last English champions in 1990 and have since finished runners-up on four separate occasions: 1990/91, 2001/02, 2008/09 and 2013/14.

Of their big six rivals Klopp’s men have Tottenham Hotspur (March 31) and Chelsea (April 14), both at home, left to face.

Either side of the Chelsea showdown is a Champions League quarter-final meeting with FC Porto whom the Reds comfortably defeated 5-0 on aggregate in last season’s round of 16.
