The advice Sir Alex Ferguson gave Man Utd playmaker Jesse Lingard

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson once reassured him over his future at the club.

The 26-year-old has been one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s favourite players to use since the Norwegian took charge in December, but Lingard endured a slow start at United.

Why did Sir Alex tell Lingard to have patience? Five key things to know…

  1. Jesse Lingard joined Manchester United as a seven-year-old, rising through the ranks.
  2. But the midfielder was sent on four loan deals before making his first-team debut aged 21.
  3. Lingard is now one of United’s key midfielders under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
  4. And he has now revealed Sir Alex Ferguson once told him to be patient as he was a late developer.
  5. Jesse Lingard has played 28 games for United this season, scoring five goals.

Lingard joined United as a seven-year-old and made his way through the academy, being named on the bench twice under Sir Alex Ferguson during the 2011/12 season. But, without a competitive appearance, Lingard was then sent out on loan to Leicester City, Birmingham City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Derby County.

The midfielder would finally be given his United debut under Louis van Gaal in 2014 and Lingard has not looked back since, becoming increasingly important for club and country.

And Lingard has now revealed the advice he was given when coming through the academy by legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

When asked about how he balanced school work with training at United, Lingard told the club’s official website: “Quite well. Back then it was Tuesdays and Thursdays we used to train, so after school, we’d go home, get changed, have a bit of food and then go straight down the motorway to Manchester.

“I was very patient and obviously United told me to be patient. I listened to the words of the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson.

“He always said I was a late developer, so ‘be patient and your time will come’.”

Lingard thanks Van Gaal after Dutchman’s retirement

While some may look at Louis van Gaal’s spell at United as unsuccessful, with the Dutchman lasting just two years and winning one FA Cup – in his final game before being sacked, the former Barcelona boss’ reign did have its positives.

Van Gaal was responsible for the first-team debuts of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, as well as the purchase of Anthony Martial – all of whom have gone on to become key players.

And, upon the news of Van Gaal’s retirement, Lingard was quick to express his gratitude to the Dutchman.

He tweeted: “I’ll never forget the trust you had in me.

“I owe you so much. Thank you, boss!”
