Kovac: Premier League is more appealing than Bundesliga

Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac has admitted his side are unable to compete with the spending power of Premier League clubs including Liverpool.

Kovac’s side were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool in midweek, sending the defending Bundesliga champions out of the Champions League before the quarter-finals stage for the first time since 2010/11.

Does the Premier League have an advantage over the Bundesliga? Five key things to know…

  1. Liverpool beat Bayern Munich 3-1 in midweek to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
  2. The two other Bundesliga teams in the competition were also beaten by Premier League opposition.
  3. Bayern’s title rivals Borussia Dortmund were swept away by Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester City thumped Schalke.
  4. And Niko Kovac believes this was no accident, due to the Premier League’s spending power.
  5. Liverpool’s goalscorers on Wednesday night, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk, cost the Reds a combined £109m.

Goals from Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk gave Liverpool the win, with the latter costing the Reds £75m in January 2018. And Kovac believes Liverpool’s spending power gave them the advantage over Bayern.

“Money doesn’t always win, but Jurgen Klopp spent €500 million in the last four years,” Kovac told reporters.

“Even we as the Bundesliga forerunners did not do that. It’s just an advantage [for them].

“We must now continue with our planning and reflect about how we want to set ourselves up for the new season. We must not lie to ourselves. It’s not by accident that three German clubs are eliminated by three English clubs.

“For the top stars, it’s just more appealing to go to the Premier League than to Bundesliga.”

Niko Kovac’s plan to counter-act Premier League appeal

Despite his comments on the Premier League’s financial advantage, Kovac has come up with a plan to get German football competing once again.

He added: “If we want to make up for this, we must identify young and talented players early on.

“The basic question is: Do we want to play in that game or not and then [we must] calculate on other teams running away from us.”

Bayern have started plans to rebuild their squad with young stars, and have already brought 18-year-old Canadian international Alphonso Davies and 19-year-old Woo-yeong Jeong.

The German club have also repeatedly been linked with a move for Chelsea teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi, and were willing to part with £40m for the youngster in January.
