Pep Guardiola: Jadon Sancho didn’t want to take on Man City challenge

Pep Guardiola says Jadon Sancho didn’t want to take on the challenge at Manchester City.

The 18-year-old winger is enjoying an impressive season with Borussia Dortmund whom he joined from the English champions in 2017.

The rise and rise of Sancho. Five things to know…

  1. Sancho joined City’s academy from Watford in 2015.
  2. He made 35 appearances for City’s various youth teams.
  3. With a pathway to City’s first team looking difficult Sancho opted to join Borussia Dortmund.
  4. Sancho has since gone on to make 46 appearances for the Bundesliga giants.
  5. So far he’s registered 10 goals and created 19.

Sancho, born and raised in London, began his footballing journey at Watford before moving north to Manchester City.

A pivotal figure in their various youth teams many earmarked him to break into Pep Guardiola’s first team, however, after reportedly not being assured of first-team playing time Sancho decided it was time to move on and Borussia Dortmund snapped him up for approximately £8m in August 2017.

Guardiola, who has praised Sancho for the way he’s developed, felt he lacked the mindset to compete for a spot under his leadership.

“I don’t know. He didn’t want to take this challenge, this opportunity to discover if he was able to,” he told reporters.

“He decided to go there. So, it’s perfect. It’s going well and congratulations on what he is doing.

“He is doing an incredible performance. He did it incredibly well this season. What would have happened this season [at City]? I don’t know.

“Again, with the players, it depends on them and what they do on the pitch.”

A season to remember

Having made 12 league appearances in his debut season for BVB, in which he bagged one goal and four assists, the Londoner has truly come on leaps and bounds this campaign.

So far he’s made 25 appearances in the Bundesliga under Lucien Favre and subsequently bagged eight goals whilst creating a further 10 for his teammates. No one in Germany’s top division has made more assists.

His performances earned him an England call-up and Sancho made his debut in last October’s goalless draw at Croatia, before adding two more caps against USA (3-0) and Croatia (2-1). He assisted Trent Alexander-Arnold for England’s second against the United States.
