Fifa confirm probe into Karius complaint amid claims Liverpool loanee is not being paid by Besiktas

The agent of Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has complained to FIFA over four months worth of alleged unpaid wages from loan club Besiktas.

Karius agreed a two-year loan deal with Besiktas last summer but has struggled for consistency in Turkey after a turbulent end to last season with Liverpool.

Who is accused of owing Karius money? Five key things to know…

  1. Reports claim Besiktas are accused of owing Karius four months worth of unpaid wages.
  2. Liverpool, who are said to have no plans to cut Karius’ loan short, aren’t accused of anything.
  3. Karius’ agent has complained to FIFA, the footballing body has confirmed.
  4. The German was criticised by his own manager for a recent poor display.
  5. Karius has conceded 27 goals in 21 league appearances this term, keeping five clean sheets.

The Telegraph reports Karius believes he is owed around £1 million worth of wages by Besiktas, who currently sit third in the Turkish top-flight, 13 points behind leaders Istanbul Basaksehir.

On Wednesday, a FIFA spokesperson confirmed Karius’ agent has lodged a complaint and the situation will be investigated.

The spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we have received a claim from the player Loris Karius against the club Besiktas.

“The matter is currently being investigated and consequently we cannot provide any further comments.”

Karius does not feel part of the team – Besiktas boss

Following a disappointing individual performance by Karius in Besiktas’ 3-2 win over Konyaspor last weekend, manager Senol Gunes criticised the 25-year-old.

“Karius has gone a bit stagnant, something is wrong with his electricity, motivation, enthusiasm for the game. He does not really feel a part of the team,” Gunes said.

“It’s something we haven’t been able to work out and, of course, I am partly to blame for this.”

Karius was Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper last season but a disastrous double-error in the Champions League final brought an end to that.

His replacement, Alisson Becker, has kept 17 clean sheets in 30 Premier League games since arriving at Anfield.
