David Beckham: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made ex-Man Utd players “very proud”

Former England captain and Manchester United midfielder David Beckham believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made the club’s former players “very proud”.

The 46-year-old Norwegian has rejuvenated the club since stepping in on an interim basis following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho in December.

How has Solskjaer fared in the hot seat? Five key things to know…

  1. Since taking the reins in December, Solskjaer has won 14 matches, drawing twice and losing just three times.
  2. He has taken the club back into the race for a top-four finish, with United currently fifth in the Premier League.
  3. Solskjaer also masterminded an historic Champions league comeback against PSG.
  4. The club will now play Barcelona in the quarter-finals next month.
  5. That said, the previous week has proven difficult with the club losing to rivals Arsenal in the league and suffering an FA Cup elimination at the hands of Wolves.

United have enjoyed a renaissance under the guidance of Solskjaer, who has steadied the ship following a turbulent first half of the season under Mourinho.

And Beckham, who played alongside the former marksman at Old Trafford, notably during the famous 1998/99 treble-winning season, believes his ex-teammate has done  the old guard “very proud”.

He told Reuters: “As a manager he’s done it in a mature way, a way that is respected by not just younger people but older ones. Having the support of The Boss [Ferguson] has also helped him and given him confidence. When you get results like he’s had, that’s great.

“To see someone that knows the club, that understands the club, come in and do as well as he has done has been great… what he’s done, makes us as ex-teammates very proud. It’s exciting.”

United were knocked out of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Wolves in the quarter-finals at the Molineux on Saturday evening.

The club will next face Watford in the Premier League after the international break on March 30.

Beckham: ‘Solskjaer has brought unity’

The Norwegian has been backed to take up the position on a permanent basis in the summer and Beckham believes such an appointment would go down very well with the fans.

The Inter Miami owner believes Solskjaer has brought the club together, uniting the players and rediscovering the ethos Sir Alex Ferguson introduced at Old Trafford.

He added: “He’s just brought the players together – and the players have responded in the right way, the way the fans had hoped. It’s just nice to see Ole do so well.

“It’s not down to me to decide. But look at the fans. They’ve loved all the time he has been the manager so far. They want that to continue.

“Ole has just come in. He gains that respect from the players because he had done it. He’d been there on the biggest stage and won, he’s been successful.”
