Every player rated as Inter complete rare double over AC Milan

Inter completed their first Serie A double over fierce rivals AC Milan for seven years with a 3-2 victory at the San Siro.

Goals from Matias Vecino, Stefan de Vrij and Lautaro Martinez earned the points for Inter, although the ‘visiting’ side were made to sweat when Milan twice came back into the game through Tiemoue Bakayoko and Mateo Musacchio.

Subsequently, Inter jumped above Milan into third place in the table, making the result even sweeter.

Here’s how every player rated on the night.

AC Milan

Gianluigi Donnarumma, 6 – Some will say his positioning was off for the opener but the cross was deceptive. Could do little about the other goals.

Davide Calabria, 5 – Left most of the attacking down the right to Suso. Lost his man from the opener and didn’t really recover.

Mateo Musacchio, 6 – Took his goal well for a centre-back, driving the ball past Handanovic from close range, but Milan needed him to be more of a presence at the back.

Alessio Romagnoli, 5 – Booked for dissent and, as captain, failed to provide the defensive leadership needed to stem the Inter tide.

Ricardo Rodriguez, 5 – Provided very little threat down the left and was hooked on the hour for another attacker.

Franck Kessie, 4 – Failed to provide the defence with any cover in the first half. Makes sense he was the first midfielder to be substituted.

Tiemoue Bakayoko, 7 – Milan’s best player. Clawed a goal back with the second excellent headed goal of the game, his first for the club.

Lucas Paqueta, 4 – Taken off at half-time after a difficult first 45 minutes in which he offered next to nothing.

Suso, 6 – Ineffective for so much of the game but then provided the dangerous cross that led to Milan’s second, and another perfect delivery that almost resulted in a late equaliser.

Hakan Calhanoglu, 6 – Conceded possession too easily in the first half but was always a threat from set pieces. His free-kick delivery for Bakayoko’s goal was pinpoint.

Krzysztof Piatek, 5 – Simply couldn’t find the room between Inter’s centre-backs to have any sort of effect on the game.

Substitutes

Patrick Crutone, 5 – Replaced Rodriguez in the 58th minute. The change of system was important but Crutone didn’t make much of a mark until coming incredibly close to equalising at the death.

Andrea Conti, N/A – Came on for Kessie with 20 minutes to go. Was shown a red card late on but the decision was changed to a booking.

Samu Castillejo, 5 – Milan’s improvement coincided with his arrival, although he could have been more involved.

Inter Milan

Samir Handanovic, 6 – Bakayoko’s header was too powerful to stop and he did well to prevent a D’Ambrosio own goal before Musacchio scored.

Danilo D’Ambrosio, 7 – Milan barely attacked down his side. Perhaps should have been on his toes for Milan’s second goal. Made up for it with a crucial stoppage time block.

Stefan de Vrij, 8 – Doubled Inter’s lead with a brilliant header, powering the ball back across the goalkeeper like a striker. Helped his centre-back partner to keep Milan’s forwards quiet.

Milan Skriniar, 7 – Battled with the in-form Piatek and mostly came out on top. Dealt with Suso whenever the Spaniard roamed into central areas with his commanding presence.

Kwadwo Asamoah, 6 – Didn’t get too far forward until late when he showed his experience by driving forward and keeping the ball away from a desperate Milan.

Marcelo Brozovic, 6 – Tired before the rest of his midfield teammates and was subsequently substituted after helping Inter gain control in the middle third.

Matias Vecino, 7 – Took his early opener well and caused Milan all sorts of problems in the first half, when he was given lots of room. Quietened after the break.

Roberto Gagliardini, 7 – Chipped in with a couple of important moments at either end of the pitch, including more than one clearance when Milan were sending in crosses towards the end.

Matteo Politano, 7 – Won the penalty with an incisive run into the box. Milan couldn’t deal with his pace but his final ball could have been better.

Ivan Perisic, 7 – Needed a big performance amid a poor run of form and came up with a key moment when his cross eventually fell to Vecino for the first goal. Will be disappointed he didn’t get into more goalscoring positions himself though.

Lautaro Martinez, 8 – Responsible for two key moments, heading the ball down for Vecino’s goal and scoring confidently from the spot to regain Inter’s two-goal advantage. Made the fans forget all about the absent Mauro Icardi.

Substitutes

Borja Valero, N/A  – Replaced Brozovic in the 73rd minute but barely saw the ball.

Antonio Candreva, N/A – Came on for Politano with six minutes remaining and helped Inter see the game out.

Andrea Ranocchia, N/A – A stoppage time arrival.
