Klopp fumes & Liverpool fans are left nervous after by last-minute incident v Bayern

Andy Robertson will miss the first leg of Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final clash after picking up a last minute booking against Bayern Munich.

The Reds ran out 3-1 winners against the German giants on Wednesday night but not without causing a few moments of unease for Jurgen Klopp.

Why was Klopp fuming? Five key things to know…

  1. Robertson was at fault for Bayern’s equaliser, allowing Serge Gnabry to deliver a wicked cross for Joel Matip’s own goal.
  2. As Matip fired into his own net, the camera cut to an enraged Klopp screaming at Robertson for his lapse in judgment.
  3. Liverpool ultimately went through after a second half masterclass but will be without Robertson for the quarter-final first leg.
  4. The left-back caught Leon Goretzka late on and referee Daniele Orsato brandished a yellow card.
  5. Robertson has registered more assists (eight) than any defender in the Premier League.

The German was incensed with Robertson’s misjudged handling of Gnabry for the Bavarian’s equalising goal.

And it wouldn’t get any better for the Scotland international as he picked up a 92nd minute yellow card, ruling him out of the next match for card accumulation.

That leaves just Alberto Moreno to slot in, or for James Milner to occupy as an auxiliary left-back, a role he has performed numerous times since Klopp took charge.

Speaking about the incident after the match goalscorer Virgil van Dijk told BT Sport: “It happens in games, and obviously he’s a bit unlucky. We need to cover for him, but we have enough quality in the squad so we’ll see.”

Klopp also gave his two cents regarding Robertson’s late booking, saying he thought the decision was harsh given the stage of the match.

Asked about slapping his own head upon seeing his first-choice left-back pick up a suspension, Klopp told BT after the game: “Of course it’s not cool, but he’s still a young boy.

“I asked the ref after the game, he thought it was reckless. I said ‘come on, it’s the last minute of the game. Nothing happened.’

“But happened, so we should not moan about things like that.”

How fans reacted…

There is clearly a sense of anxiousness with the prospect of arguably the best left-back in the Premier League, if not world football, missing what could prove a crucial first leg tie for Liverpool.

Milner will likely come in for the suspended Scot and his reaction to that prospect says it all…
