After travelling nearly 500 miles to watch their side get hammered 7-0 by Manchester City, Schalke fans had salt rubbed into their wounds when they had to fly back to Germany on a Borussia Dortmund-branded plane.
When Schalke fans arrived at the Etihad on Tuesday evening they may have entered the ground with hope in their hearts.
Five things you need to know about Schalke fans’ miserable night in Manchester…
- Schalke were still in the tie after only being a goal behind in the first leg, which they lost 3-2 at home.
- The Germans were still in the game after 35 minutes and Schalke fans were in good spirits.
- Then 10 minutes later their side found themselves 3-0 behind after a brace from Sergio Aguero and a goal from former Schalke man Leroy Sane
- City really got their point cross in the second half with four more goals, dashing all hope for the Schalke fans.
- That was not the end of the humiliation for the travelling supporters as some of the had to return home on a Borussia Dortmund-branded jet – a night to forget.
Their beloved team were only a goal behind in the first leg, and were still in the tie, until Sergio Aguero opened the scoring late in the first half.
After that, all of Schalke fans’ hopes were dashed as Guardiola’s dam busters poured in the goals, sending the visitors back to Germany and out of the Champions League.
Unfortunately for Schalke fans, that humiliating defeat was not the only ignominy they would experience that evening. When they wanted to fly back home, they were invited to board a black and yellow airbus with the logo of bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund on the stern.
“Its use is in this case, was pure coincidence, and was a normal scheduled airliner of our fleet,” said the press spokesman Florian Gränzdörffer of Eurowings – the company behind the plane.”
The Dortmund plane travels daily around Europe and it appears the airline is well aware of its divisive paint job.
Gränzdörffer added: “Of course, we observe that passengers are particularly responsive to this aircraft. But we take it with humour, take it sporty.”

A bad week only got worse for Domenico Tedesco
In the aftermath of that defeat Schalke’s manager Domenico Tedesco was sacked on Friday and will be replaced by former manager Huub Stevens and ex-midfielder Mike Buskens for their next match against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Schalke sporting director Jochen Schneider told reporters: “This decision was anything but easy because Domenico Tedesco is very highly valued by Schalke. Last season he was able to oversee a very positive sporting development, which reached its high point by finishing runner-up in the championship.”
“However, we shouldn’t misjudge that this season the bottom line is negative.”
Schalke are enduring there worst campaign since they were relegated from the Bundesliga in 1982-83, have suffered defeat in their last five games and sit just three places above the German top flight’s relegation zone, only four points clear of 16th-placed Stuttgart.
