Confirmed: Man Utd legend Paul Scholes explains why he’s quit Oldham after 31 days in charge

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has left his role as Oldham Athletic after just seven games.

Scholes took charge of the Latics in February, when they were 11th in League Two but has not won since his opening game – losing three and drawing three of his past six.

Why has Scholes left Oldham? Five key things to know…

  1. Paul Scholes took charge of boyhood club Oldham Athletic on February 11.
  2. The former Manchester United midfielder oversaw seven games, winning just once.
  3. In that time, the Latics have dropped from 11th to 14th in League Two and face a serious battle should they wish to fight for a play-off place.
  4. And they will have to do so without Scholes, who has announced his resignation with immediate effect.
  5. Among the reasons given, Scholes admitted his belief he would not be able to operate as intended when taking the job.

Oldham are currently 14th in League Two and look to be too far off for a late push to reach the play-offs before the end of the season.

But, in a statement released upon his shock departure, Scholes has revealed he resigned from his boyhood club due to being unable to operate as he intended.

“It is with great regret that I have decided to leave the club with immediate effect,” Scholes said in a statement, as reported by the BBC.

“I hoped to at the very least, see out my initial term of 18 months as the manager of a club I’ve supported all my life.

“The fans, players, my friends and family all knew how proud and excited I was to take this role.

“In the short period since I took on the role it unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role.

“I wish the fans, the players and the staff – who have been tremendous – all the best for the rest of the season and will continue to watch and support the club as a fan.”

“That was quick…” Twitter reacts to Scholes’ swift departure

In the eyes of the wider public, Scholes’ start at Oldham had done slightly under the radar after his initial appointment was announced. As such, there was shock on social media when his departure was revealed.

However, some believed Scholes’ departure was because he could not handle the step up from punditry.
